What’s the History of Norco?

Norco started in Canada in 1965. It’s one of the oldest brands in North American cycling history. Norco is well known for its mountain and off-road bikes. They are trusted by cyclists because there’s just no nonsense bikes made for tough terrain.

They didn’t become popular through big sponsorships or by being the first to introduce new technology. Norco just focused on durable, tough, agile, off-road bikes that could take on the Canadian terrain. They were part of the big mountain bike revolution when it all just went wild.

What are Norco Bikes?

Norco offers many bikes, but mainly focuses on off-road cycling. As far as road and urban cycling, only the Section and the Indie differ, but that's the exception. Here are the bikes they typically have available, mainly the most popular ones.

  • Range VLT CX: Full-power electric enduro e-MTB
  • Sight VLT TQ: Electric trail e-MTB
  • Fluid VLT: Trail-focused electric mountain bike
  • Shore / Aurum: Downhill & freeride mountain bikes
  • Range: Enduro mountain bike
  • Sight: Trail mountain bike
  • Fluid: Trail / all-round mountain bike
  • Revolver: XC race bike
  • Search: Gravel/adventure bike
  • Section: Road endurance bike
  • Indie: Urban/commuter bike
  • Bigfoot VLT: Fat Biking

Who Are Norco Bikes For?

Norco bikes are not the lightest. They are not the most advanced or even the most comfortable. They are made for riders who want to ride aggressively, push limits, and want the extra confidence to go down a trail faster than they thought they could.

The bikes are designed around stability and control. What Norco does well is use modern geometry, dial in the suspension, and give the rider the feel of being one with the bike. For many riders, they offer a really nice flow and feel.

Norco may not be for you if:
  • You want ultra-light racing bikes with the latest tech
  • You prefer a comfortable geometry, which is relaxed and upright
  • You value lifestyle branding more than just brute performance

What Are the Motors and Batteries Like on Norco E-Bikes?

Norco keeps it simple when it comes to motors and batteries. They outsource to the experts. On most models, you will find Shimano Steps systems such as the Shimano EP8 drive system. On some newer models, you will get Bosch systems, such as the Bosch Performance Line CX or Bosch Performance Line SX.

In my opinion, they couldn’t have chosen a better system. Both Shimano and Bosch systems are powerful and punchy, and for off-road riding, offer not just great assistance but also a good ride feel. As far as electric assist goes, the EP8 drive system and the Bosch Performance Line CX smart system have excellent delivery and feel.

The motors on the Shimano EP8 drive system and the Bosch Performance line SX, for example, typically have a 250-watt rating due to legal restrictions, but can peak at higher watts. With 540wh to 900wh batteries, they can provide an excellent range of about a dozen miles, obviously, terrain-, rider-, and assistance-level-dependent.

How Does a Norco Bike Ride?

One of the best features of a Norco bike is the way it feels to ride. They have certain characteristics that make the bikes give an excellent ride. Firstly, the geometry focuses on a longer reach and slacker head tube angles, and it balances the suspension really well.

This gives the bike good stability at speed and makes it feel calm and controllable on steep descents. The best benefit comes from how it feels when it goes wrong. The bike feels predictable, and you can easily correct it.

We make Norco sound quite basic, even though the technology is good. The VPSHP suspension system (Virtual Pivot Suspension) is very advanced. The VPSHP suspension layout helps control and, combined with a mullet configuration (Mixed wheel sizes), makes for incredible handling.

Components

Norco doesn't mess around with components either. You will see groupsets such as the Shimano Deore XT Di2, Shimano XT M8100 and even the SRAM Rival AXS XPLR. Hydraulic disc brakes from the top-end brands, and dropper posts on some models.

Are Norco Bikes Good Value for Money?

Norco is not the cheapest bike, but it's not silly expensive either. They are classed as a premium brand, and they offer great value for money. You might be able to buy a Marin MTB for less money, but you wouldn’t get the same ride feel.

Final Verdict on Norco Bikes

Norco bikes are made for hard, aggressive riding. They are not flashy, they are generally not utility, but they will perform and be tough. They help inspire riders to be better and push harder on the trails, and are very forgiving.

Norco is a great choice, but if you are looking for a bike for long days out riding slowly or bikepacking, the aggressive nature might not suit you. Norco makes fun bikes that go fast.
