A bike’s handlebars have to be removed or loosened to fit inside the shipping box, and that’s just a law of physics (although it’s one of the lesser-known ones). The handlebars and pedals are the widest parts of the bike and removing them allows for a much more compact box.

And that means that it’s likely on you to install the handlebars at home— but I know you’ve got it. I’ll lay out how to build an electric bike once it arrives at your home, starting with the handlebars.

How does Upway ship your e-Bike?

The good news is that Upway delivers your new electric bike to your door nearly fully assembled! Before your bike gets shipped, our mechanics do the final quality control to make sure that your bike is perfect right out of the box. It’s carefully protected inside the shipping box and customers choose the level of disassembly that works for them.

  • 15-Minute Assembly: You just have to attach the handlebar & the front wheel, screw on the pedals and you're ready to ride!

  • 5-Minute Assembly: Take a couple of minutes to screw on the pedals & straighten the handlebars and you’re all set.

Both options come with all the instructions and tools that you need. For more information, including the cost, shipping time, and carrier options, check out our complete guide on how Upway ships electric bikes— video assembly tutorials included!

These simple steps will help you out if you select the standard “15-Minute Assembly” option as well as any bike handlebars you need to install.

1.  Grab the right tool

Upway includes a 4mm Allen key inside the small tool bag provided with the e-Bike.

2.  Remove the faceplate

Take out the four screws on the front of the stem— this removes what is called the “face plate”.

3.  Attach the handlebars

Press the center of the handlebars into that open area on the stem and put on the face plate. Screw in the four screws, tightening them all down lightly. Make sure you attach the handlebars the right way around, avoiding twisting the cables.

4.  Set the angle of the handlebars

With the screws tightened almost but not all the way, set the handlebars to the angle you desire. Then fully tighten the screws down very snugly.

Older traditional bikes may have a different stem and handlebar connection, but nearly all electric bikes have a face plate to easily and directly take off the handlebars. Whether it’s an e-MTB or cargo e-Bike, take care to set the handlebars at an angle that’s comfortable to you. Different e-Bikes brands vary on handlebar displays, but many commuter e-Bikes have a display you may need to connect or tighten down.

If you chose “5-minute assembly” instead, the handlebar installation is truly a piece of cake.

1.  Straighten the handlebars

The handlebars are already on the bike but are pushed to one side. Using the front wheel as a guide, straighten the handlebars.

2.  Tighten the stem bolts

Use the provided 6mm Allen key to tighten the two stem bolts. Tighten them down alternating between the bolts to ensure balanced pressure on the steerer tube. Make sure they are very snug. There’s probably a torque recommendation listed on the stem if you have a torque wrench.
