There’ll come a day when you may need to replace your electric bike’s battery. Hopefully, this moment arrives after many years of use and thousands of miles— and that extended lifespan is totally possible given how reliable e-Bike batteries have become. This swap is important to get right to replace your old battery with the correct new one and return to riding. Here’s all you need to know about how to choose the proper e-Bike battery replacement.

👋  Do you know Upway?

Upway is your go-to destination for buying and selling e-Bikes online. Find your next e-Bike at up to 60% off retail, available in new or like-new condition.

When is it time to replace my e-Bike’s battery?

E-Bike battery capacity and performance wane over time— it’s a natural decline, but it shouldn’t be noticeable until about 500 charge cycles, or even longer. Most batteries retain most of their capacity for between 500 to 1,000 charge cycles, and top brands like Specialized and Giant rate their battery packs for much more.

But if the drop in performance is affecting your ride, it’s time to start thinking about replacing the battery. The same happens to other electronics like our smartphones and computers— short battery life is frustrating in our daily routines and will limit how far you can ride. If your battery is relatively new and isn’t providing enough range, there may be an issue— otherwise, an old battery with gradually decreasing range is a fact of e-Bike life.

How to choose the correct e-Bike battery replacement

Bosch PowerTube ebike battery

The easiest and most recommended option is to replace the existing battery with the same model. This one-for-one replacement ensures compatibility and quality and avoids any possible electronic malfunction with the rest of the drive unit.

Popular bike and battery manufacturers such as Bosch, Trek, Specialized, Aventon, and more all sell spare or replacement batteries, online or at the local dealer. There are typically different battery models, so you’ll have to make sure it matches the old one on your e-Bike. For example, Bosch’s battery range includes models like the PowerPack Frame, PowerPack Rack, PowerTube, and CompactTube all in various sizes. ,

This is probably a great time to finally crack open that e-Bike manual and check what the manufacturer recommends, and an even better time to heed its advice. If you’re unsure, ask your local e-Bike shop or the retailer where you got your bike originally. Upway sells a selection of Bosch electric bike batteries and chargers. There are DIY riders and other e-Bikers who buy separate, third-party batteries or commission their own from smaller battery makers, but I don’t recommend this.

How to tell if a battery is high-quality?

For non-electricians like me, battery specifications and information can seem like a whole bunch of unintelligible jargon. It can also be difficult to understand what an e-Bike battery really is since they are always hidden under plastic covers. Here’s what to pay attention to when shopping for a new battery.

Battery cells

Lithium ion battery 18650 Panasonic

Electric bike battery packs are actually made up of dozens of smaller batteries. These individual batteries look a bit like giant AA batteries. Most e-Bike batteries are built from 18650 lithium-ion cells connected together to form the entire larger battery pack.

You’ll want these cells to be manufactured by reliable brands like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic. These cells are quality-tested and meet standards related to safety and capacity. Low-end cells can have a capacity that is less than what’s advertised or, at worst, be a safety hazard. I won’t even consider non-name-brand battery cells, and neither should you.

Battery pack construction

Another crucial element of battery quality is how the individual cells are joined together to form the pack. There are a couple of ways to connect all the batteries, including spot welding and ultrasonic welding. Ultrasonic welding is used in higher quality batteries and can utilize fuse wires to connect the cells, which integrates certain fire safety measures in the case of a shorted cell.

The cells must also be firmly secured in place, ensuring they don’t move around and put stress on the welds. There can be residues, glues, shrink wrap, and frames to provide structure to the pack and protect it against shocks and vibrations that will inevitably happen while riding a bike.

Both this internal layer and the outer enclosure are important to the quality and longevity of the battery. Most batteries are protected by a final plastic cover. It’s designed to be highly water-resistant and will have features such as the mounting hardware, electric ports, battery life indicator, and key lock.

Battery management system (BMS)

Once touted as a premium feature, BMS is now a standard element of electric bike batteries in order to improve performance and safety. I won’t get into the weeds of it here, but BMS technology regulates the charging and discharging of the energy in the cells to ensure a balance throughout the entire pack. This balanced voltage and performance help cell longevity and reduce the possibility of a battery fire.

Never buy an e-Bike battery that doesn’t use:

  • Quality battery cells are manufactured by well-known brands like Panasonic, LG, or Samsung
  • Battery management system technology
  • Water-resistant and shock-resistant construction and enclosure

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new e-Bike battery cost?

Electric bike batteries typically cost between $600 to $1,000, depending on the brand and capacity.

Can I repair my e-Bike battery myself?

It's not recommended to repair or recondition your electric bike's battery yourself. It requires electrical expertise and any damage can be dangerous because of the stored energy and fire risk.

Is it better to have a removable battery on an electric bike?

I’m a big fan of removable batteries since they offer more options for charging, along with the advantage of swapping in a spare battery to extend the range. Most electric bikes have a removable battery so a majority of bike manufacturers and riders must agree with me. However, a non-removable battery is definitely not a deal breaker.

Should I remove my e-Bike battery when not in use?

For short-term storage, it’s encouraged to leave the battery on the bike where it’s designed to be. For long-term storage, take it out and keep it at room temperature. Modern chargers are designed to prevent overcharging, but keeping it at 100% charge levels still puts extra stress on the battery.

Key Takeaways

  1. Replace Like-for-Like: Always opt for a manufacturer-approved battery replacement to ensure safety, performance, and compatibility.
  2. Prioritize Quality Cells: Look for batteries built with trusted lithium-ion cells from top brands like Samsung, LG, or Panasonic.
  3. Don’t Skip the BMS: A battery management system (BMS) is essential for safe charging, cell longevity, and overall battery health.
