How to charge an electric bike ?

Electric bikes are like analogue bikes, but way more fun! The fun, of course, comes from the motor and battery. And just like we need sleep to recharge and perform at our best, our electric bikes need recharging to boost our rides. In this article, we’ll take a look at some electric bike charging tips and develop a basic understanding of  how to safely keep the battery performing at its best, not to mention extending battery life, to give you more return on your investment.

How does recharging e-Bikes batteries work ?

Electric bikes generally use lithium-ion batteries to power the motor and provide assistance while we ride. When the battery drains, it needs to be recharged to provide assistance once more. Charging an electric bike battery is usually simple – but depends on the type of battery and bike you have.

The steps to charge an electric bike depend on whether your battery is removable or not. Although, it’s important to note you don’t necessarily need to remove the battery to charge it – it can stay on/in the bike if you wish.

Essentially, every e-bike will have a battery charge port which is hidden behind a waterproof and dust proof cover. Once you find this, you can insert the correct end of the e-bike charger into the charging port of the bike or battery. The other end plugs into the wall outlet – it is best practice to connect into the bike first and the wall second. Typically, you can look for a green light on your charger as an indicator of the battery's charge level.

Charging your electric bike safely

Whether you’re charging your electric bike at home or at an electric bike charging station, there are a few things you can do to make sure you’re being safe. Firstly, never leave the battery unattended while it’s charging if you can help it. Secondly, think about where you’re charging it – if it’s in the house, make sure it’s in a room that doesn’t block any fire exits – and preferably behind a fire door.

On the whole, e-Bike batteries and chargers are safe, but with more electric bike charger types coming onto the market (think cheap, non-standardized chargers) you need to make sure you buy a charger that is from a reputable brand – and is manufacturer recommended. Upway checks all the batteries and motors on the e-bikes we sell thoroughly before putting them back onto the market.

Electric bike battery tips

Keeping on top of your electric bike battery maintenance can save you hundreds of dollars on a new one. We recommend not draining the battery to 0% if you can help it. If you repeatedly drain it, it negatively impacts the recharging ability and harms the battery life. Most manufacturers give a warranty based on years or charge cycles (usually around 500). But the charges could be reduced if the battery is consistently drained.

It’s also important to focus on electric bike battery care. Don’t drop the battery or expose it to extreme temperatures. Either of these could cause issues with the internals and cause damage or even stop them working as they should.

How do you charge electric bicycles?

Electric bicycles are charged through their batteries. Some are removable from the bike and can be charged closer to a wall outlet inside the home, or you can plug the charger directly into the bike’s charge port. The location of the charge port varies depending on the bike, but it’s a good starting place to find the battery and go from there.

Can you charge an e-Bike at home?

You can and the charging process is super simple! Just connect the charger to your bike’s battery charger port, and the power lead into the same mains outlet you use for your other home electrical devices. Make sure you don’t leave it on overnight, and keep it in a room away from fire exits just in case.

Do electric bikes charge when you pedal?

Only a few models on the market offer battery regeneration. The effectiveness is also quite low – think electric car technology from a few years ago. So while it may add a few miles to your range, it’s unlikely to provide great benefit compared to charging the battery via a charger and socket.

What other factors affect battery life?

The amount of times you've charged your bike's battery will have an impact on its life. As will the temperature you ride in, with moderate temperatures being optimal... your battery capacity will seem as though it dips in extreme cold or extreme warm conditions, but once returned to a comfortable midpoint, that performance should return.

What if I want to ride further than my current battery allows?

One solution that is very popular with longer-distance e-bike riders is to bring an additional battery pack along for the adventure. Carrying a spare battery pack means you have effectively double the range, at only a comparatively small extra weight penalty. Of course, you can also plan a route that includes opportunities to recharge at charging stations, or even in cycling-friendly roadside businesses, but you may not want to sit still for an hour of charging before getting going again.
