One of the biggest benefits of buying a new electric bike is the generous warranty provided directly by the brand to the original owner (aka you). Brand-new models are eligible for warranties that cover the frame, structural components, and the electronics system. Warranties for refurbished e-Bikes can vary across retailers; Upway’s certified pre-owned warranty matches or exceeds some new bike warranties. Learn about the difference in coverage between warranties for new and refurbished e-Bikes— you might be surprised by just how similar they can be.

What is an e-Bike warranty? Brand-new vs. refurbished

Across the industry, most e-Bike brands offer 1- to 2-year warranties on major components such as the battery, motor, and controller when you buy a brand-new model. The warranty on the bike’s frame is often longer— many brands provide a lifetime warranty to the original owner on structural defects of frames and rigid forks. These warranties and any related claims are handled directly by the brand and its local dealer or bike shop.

That original warranty, however, doesn’t transfer when the bike receives a new owner. But refurbished electric bikes come with a separate warranty that stands behind the reconditioning process, encouraging buyer confidence. For example, pre-owned e-Bike retailers like Upway provide strong warranties on refurbished models due to their rigorous inspection and certification process. That said, most refurbished e-Bike warranties don’t include an option for a lifetime structural warranty on the frame and fork.

Frame warranties are for new e-Bikes

A common part of warranties for new bikes and electric bikes is a long-term warranty on the structural components of the bike, meaning the frame and fork. Rigid forks are typically included in the structural warranty while suspension forks have separate conditions. The frame comes directly from the manufacturer, and many brands offer lifetime warranties against material or manufacturing defects. Often, owners must register their bike and frame within 90 days or so after purchase to activate the lifetime frame warranty. If your frame cracks, breaks, or suffers damage during normal use (not a crash, for example), it’s likely covered by the warranty. Since used bikes have a different owner than the original purchaser, the frame warranty does not carry over.

Different top e-Bike brands provide different warranties on their products. If you buy an electric bike directly from one of the brands below, here’s what you can expect in terms of frame and electronics warranties:

  • Trek: Lifetime warranty for framesets, including the main frame and rigid fork for the original owner. There’s a 2-year warranty for the motor and battery.

  • Giant/Liv: Lifetime warranty for the original owner on frames and rigid forks, excluding downhill mountain bikes. E-Bike electronic components and the battery are covered for 2 years or a certain number of recharge cycles.

  • Cannondale: E-Bike parts covered by the original manufacturer’s stated warranty of said part.

  • Gazelle: 2-year warranty on the motor, display, rotation sensor, battery, and cycle controller. 10-year warranty on frame and non-suspension front forks.

  • Aventon: Motor and drive system are covered for two years, and batteries have a 2-year warranty or up to 300 charge cycles, whichever occurs first. Accessories have 1-year coverage and there’s a lifetime structural frame warranty if the bike is registered within 90 days.

  • Specialized: E-Bikes have a warranty for 2 years or 300 charge cycles for batteries. Lifetime warranty to original owner for Specialized frames and rigid forks if registered within 90 days after purchase.

  • Rad Power Bikes: 1-year limited warranty by default on e-Bikes and components for manufacturing defects.

  • Bosch batteries: Warranty guarantees capacity for the shorter of certain periods, 2 years or 500 full charge cycles.

Every Upway e-Bike is protected by a 1-year limited warranty. This coverage applies to all bikes purchased through Upway and includes both electronic and mechanical components, so you can ride with confidence knowing we’ve got your back. We’ll handle the repair, replacement, or refund as needed. There’s no need to send your bike back— our team will coordinate with a trusted local bike shop to get you rolling again.

Please note that the warranty does not cover misuse or normal wear and tear, such as chain stretch, drivetrain wear, tire punctures, or brake pad replacement. These are normal parts of bike use and gradual wear rather than manufacturer defects or electrical issues.

Options for extended coverage

All e-Bikes sold by Upway come with a 1-year limited warranty, but there are easy, affordable options to extend coverage and protection of your electric bike. Our standard warranty covers all major components for one year. With our partners at Extend, you can add 1 to 3 extra years of protection, which will cover accidental damage as well as mechanical or electrical failures once Upway’s standard warranty ends. For even greater peace of mind, Sundays Insurance goes beyond the home to cover theft, accidents, and malicious damage. These extended warranty options are available at checkout when purchasing any e-Bike on Upway.
