Should I Worry About Error Codes On My Biria E-Bike?

Error codes are not a bad thing. They are designed to protect the bike and tell you when it needs attention. It’s very similar to what you might get in a car with an engine management system or on a computer.

A good example is overvoltage detection. Once the bike senses a voltage that’s too high, it limits or turns off the motor and sends you a code to investigate. In this case, it could be as simple as blocked ventilation on the motor.

Biria Bikes And Equipped Motors

Biria bikes were originally founded in 1991, but only came to the US in 2002. They make very practical bikes. Folding electric bikes and easy step-through e-Bikes are some of the types, and they also make regular commuter bikes.

Biria bikes use multiple different motors on their electric bikes. This does make it a little more complicated to understand, but we have broken the errors down by manufacturer. They mostly use Bafang motors, but some bikes have a BionX motor, which, unfortunately, is no longer in business.

Error Code 001 / 002 – Battery Communication Error

This is when the battery cannot communicate with the control. Typically caused by dirty or worn contacts, connectors, or damaged wiring.

Remove the battery. Clean the contacts and ensure any plugs are in properly. Finally, check for damage to any wires and the connectors. This should solve this error code.

Error Code 006: Battery Overtemperature

This is when the battery is too hot to operate. It could be from using too much assistance for too long. It could be an overvoltage caused by the battery.

The first place to start is by letting the bike cool down after turning it off. Check any ventilation in case it’s blocked. If the error persists, it’s good to see an expert for a battery diagnosis.

Error Code 009: Battery Voltage Fault

The voltage is outside the normal operating range. This commonly happens when the battery is very low on power. It also comes from lots of dead or aging cells.

First, check the bike for damage, and also inspect and clean the connectors in case of water ingress. In this situation, it’s a good idea to have a professional inspect and diagnose the battery. It’s not something you should open up and mess with.

Error Code 021: Motor Temperature Warning

This is when the motor temperature has reached a dangerous level. Often, it's because too much assistance has been used or because the motor has worn out internally.

Reduce the assistance level when riding and avoid keeping it too high for too long. Also, having a higher cadence can help the motor stay cool. If it keeps happening, then see an expert.

Error Code System Shutdown (No Code Displayed)

Quite common on BionX systems. It’s often caused by battery or controller faults.

It really needs an expert to perform an inspection for a proper diagnosis.

Less Common BionX Error Codes

  • Error 020 – Motor communication fault between motor and controller.
  • Error 022 – Torque sensor not reading correctly and may need calibration or service.
  • Error 023 – Speed sensor signal missing or inconsistent.
  • Error 030 – Internal controller fault detected.
  • Error 031 – Communication issue between display and controller.
  • Error 032 – Software or firmware error within the system.
  • Error 040 – Overcurrent protection triggered to prevent system damage.
  • Error 041 – Regenerative braking system fault: regen may be disabled.

With these codes, the simplest approach is to perform a power cycle (a full reset with the battery removed for 5 minutes). Then, if the code is not resolved, see an e-Bike expert. This second section of code is much more challenging to deal with.

Biria E-Bikes With Bafang Systems: Error Codes & Warnings

If your Biria uses a Bafang motor and display, it will show standard Bafang error codes. Bafang motors are on many other types of e-Bikes, such as Ride1Up, Rad Power Bikes, and Even Bluejay.

Error Code 21: Current Abnormality

The current abnormality is generally due to a wiring or controller issue.

We recommend inspecting the cables for damage and connectors for bent pins or water ingress. Fully reset the bike and try it again. If you can’t find anything and the error persists, then it needs to be checked with an e-Bike expert.

Error Code 22: Throttle Error

A throttle error code is often very simple to fix. It typically comes from a sticky throttle that isn’t returning to neutral, or from a damaged cable or connector.

Start by checking the cable, connectors, and the throttle to ensure it goes back to neutral. If it doesn’t, either have it fixed or replace it.

Error Code 23: Motor Phase Error

A motor phase error means the motor isn’t getting the power it needs from the controller. This is a motor-to-controller wiring issue.

It’s good to inspect the wires between the motor and the controller. Also, check the connections for bent pins or water ingress. This will more than likely solve it. If not, an expert will need to take a look.

Error Code 24: Motor Hall Sensor Error

The hall sensor is inside the motor and can detect movement. This can go wrong due to not regular servicing or even just an internal error.

Opening the motor is not recommended unless you are an expert. It’s good to see someone who knows what they are doing.

Error Code 25: Brake Sensor Error

A brake sensor error occurs when the brake sensor sends a signal to the controller that it is being pressed. In turn, it doesn’t let the motor engage and start.

The easiest fix for this problem is to make sure the brake lever is returned to neutral or the open position. This should fix the error. If that does

Error Code 26: Battery Voltage Too Low

When a bike shows a voltage too low error code, it’s typically an issue with the battery. It could be because it’s too cold, incredibly drained, or it might be failing.

Remove the battery from the bike and place it in a warm environment. When it reaches room temperature, fully charge it with the original charger. If the error persists, it needs to be tested at a dealer or by an expert.

Error Code 27: Battery Voltage Too High

If the battery voltage is too high, it means the BMS (battery management system) isn’t functioning properly, and the battery has a fault.

You can reset the system and hope it was a glitch, but more than likely, you will need to see an expert to repair it.

Error Code 28: Speed Sensor Error

A speed sensor error is usually caused by a misaligned speed sensor magnet on the wheel. A very common problem that is easy to fix.

Realign the magnet so it passes the sensor on the chainstay, 5-10mm gap. If that doesn’t resolve the error, check cables and connectors and replace the sensor if required.

Error Code 30 – Communication Error

A communication error indicates a problem between the controller and the display. It’s not being sent data.

When you get this error, it’s good to check the connections and wires to the display, because these are really common places where errors occur. If that doesn’t work, it's worth testing the display and replacing it if it's faulty.

Universal Error Codes First Checks

Biria has used some generic electric bike systems that we covered in another article. If you do come across these, we highly recommend following the process below first, then, if no luck, checking the generic error codes.
  • Power off the bike
  • Remove the battery
  • Wait 5 minutes
  • Reinstall the battery securely
  • Check display, brake, and speed sensor connections
  • Test ride in the lowest assist mode

Before assuming a serious fault, follow this process. It often works for all electric bikes. If the issue persists, professional inspection is the way forward.
