Nestled high in the foothills of the Santa Monica mountain range between Franklin Canyon Park and Westridge-Canyonback Wilderness is Beverly Crest. Elevation ranges from about 600 ft to 1,600 ft around Highridge Drive, Summit Drive, and nearby areas like Beverly Glen Park.
I personally wouldn’t go anywhere near this location on a traditional bicycle unless I was in weekend warrior sport mode. I also think it would require a special breed of electric bike to ride a region of significant elevation in comfort on a regular basis, and combine this with riding through downtown areas to Culver City, Mid City, Venice Beach, and Santa Monica.
E-Bike class options
Class 1 and Class 2 electric bikes are ideal for most riders. They’re permitted on bike paths and roads and provide enough power for quick acceleration and smooth cruising. However, with these steep hills, I personally would choose a Class 2 with throttle assist so I can glide up on motor power alone without pedaling if desired, especially on very hot days.
A mid-drive motor, 8 gears, and a high-power, high-torque motor are essential to comfortably pedal assist or throttle assist you up these steep inclines. Visit us in the Upway LA Bike Showroom and speak to our experts, who can help you choose, test-ride, and purchase the right bike for your needs.
Electric bike type
City bikes, hybrid e-Bikes, and lightweight commuter bikes tend to work best here. Steep inclines can lead to humps and cracks in the road (I know this from experience), making for bumpy riding at times, so gravel, hybrid, or fat-tire bikes are recommended, too.
I personally wouldn’t elect for a cargo bike for regular riding on steep, winding ascents and descents, as I think maneuvering would become an awkward daily challenge. If you do choose a cargo bike, I’d recommend a longtail variant with lots of torque, motor power, and throttle assist like the Specialized Haul LT 2024 with 9 gears, mid-drive motor, 700 W motor power, and 90 nm torque.
