The hilly parts
Baldwin Village is situated at the foot of Baldwin Hills. While it's moderately hilly in Baldwin Village, with elevation creeping up to about 100 feet, it is bordered by the very hilly region (peaking at 500 feet) comprising Baldwin Hills, the 401-acre Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, and Culver City Park, which are also hilly. Commuters to Culver City can take the less hilly route to the area north of Kenneth Hahn, and a relatively flat route from Culver City to Venice Beach and Santa Monica.
Residents in Baldwin Village should ideally choose an electric bike with excellent hill-climbing capabilities. I’d recommend that it have a good range of gears, hydraulic disc brakes (which I have found provide more controlled stopping power, particularly on steep and winding descents or switchbacks), and a mid-drive motor giving more fluid pedal assist on climbs.
The flat bits
Though leisure time may be enjoyed in the neighboring hilly recreation areas, Baldwin Village residents will most likely be commuting to Culver City and Mid-City, which are much less hilly. Longer commutes onward to Santa Monica and Venice Beach can be enjoyed via the dedicated bike trail (The Ballona Creek Trail) or a shared bike lane on Venice Blvd stretching from Culver City to Venice Beach. These routes are pretty flat.
With typical commutes from Baldwin Village being moderately hilly, I’d still opt for a hill-focused electric bike so you have the option for weekend family fun rides in Kenneth Hahn State Park.
If you are commuting all the way to Santa Monica, you might want to choose a Class 2 bike with a throttle to give you the easy no-pedal option when desired. However, with increasing speed and power restrictions on beach cycle paths, you may need to stick to public roads and bicycle lanes.
