What is a Class 3 Electric Bike

Woman changing e bike battery

E-bikes are all about giving you an extra boost, but it’s the Class 3 e-bikes that really pack a punch with top power and speed. These bikes have a pedal-assist system that helps you hit higher speeds faster and a battery that keeps everything running smoothly for a more efficient ride.

Learning about the features and capabilities of Class 3 bikes can help you select a model that matches your riding style, whether you prioritize speed for long-distance trips or need ample power for traveling through urban areas and rugged terrain.

Are There Different E-Bike Classes?

Different e-bike classes are designed to meet various riding styles, terrains and purposes. All electric bikes fall into three main classes, depending on the type of assistance they provide and the speed they can travel:

- Class 1 e-bikes are made only for pedal-assist and turn off the motor at 20 mph. These bikes are great for leisurely rides and short commutes, providing a smooth blend of human effort and electric support.

- Class 2 e-bikes combine pedal assist with a throttle, allowing riders to reach speeds up to 20 mph without pedaling. This class is perfect for start-stop commutes, providing an efficient way to conserve battery life while still enjoying the benefits of electric assistance.

- Class 3 e-bikes use only pedal assist but provide a stronger boost of power. These bikes propel riders up to 28 mph before the motor cuts out, making them suitable for long commutes or extended road trips.

How Does a Class 3 E-Bike Work?

A Class 3 e-bike uses a 250 W to 750 W electric motor integrated with a lithium-ion battery pack. When you start pedaling, the torque and cadence sensors turn on the motor control unit, which starts the motor. This electric assistance provides variable power output, typically up to 28 mph.

The bike comes with different pedal-assist levels, like Eco, Medium or Turbo, and you can choose your preferred mode using the onboard controller. The motor and battery also typically feature integrated regenerative braking technology to capture and store energy during deceleration, helping to prolong the battery life.

Are Class 3 E-Bikes Road Legal?

The legality of Class 3 e-bikes varies across states and regions because of safety concerns associated with how fast these electric bikes go. Class 3 e-bikes are permitted on roads and on-road bike lanes as part of the curb to curb infrastructure. However, restrictions often apply to bike trails and multi-use paths shared with pedestrians.

Over 30 states across the United States now use the three-class system. This standardized approach brings uniformity to e-bike regulations and allows states to decide which types of bicycle infrastructure each class can access. Due to these standard rules, e-bike manufacturers are required to place visible stickers on class 3 e-bikes, indicating their classification and promoting compliance with regulations.

Local regulations may impose additional requirements, such as helmet laws, age restrictions or designated e-bike lanes. If you plan on buying an e-bike, you need to research and understand your state and city ordinances before purchasing a Class 3 e-bike to ensure you are safe and legally compliant.
