Are all electric bike warranties the same? Each brand has its own policies, but the terms for brand-new models are generally similar, with long-term frame coverage and typically a 2-year warranty on electrical and mechanical parts. Pre-owned retailers like Upway also provide fresh warranties since coverage doesn’t normally transfer from the original owner of the bike. About 90 % of e-Bike brands offer a lifetime warranty on the frame (for the original owner), while limiting electrical and mechanical components to 1–2 years. Here’s all you need to know about what e-Bike warranties typically cover and exclude.

What e-Bike warranties typically cover

Warranties for brand-new electric bikes purchased directly from a brand or bike shop offer similar levels of coverage, but it can be worth diving into the fine print. Many brands offer a lifetime warranty on the frame of the bike and a two-year warranty on electrical and mechanical parts.

Long-term frame & structural warranty

These days, lifetime warranties for the frame are the industry standard. Trusted brands such as Trek, Giant, Cannondale, and others all provide a lifetime guarantee on the integrity of all structural components, such as the frame and rigid fork (suspension forks aren’t included). Gazelle includes a 10-year warranty on material and manufacturing defects on the frame and non-suspension front forks under normal use and treatment.

Battery & motor warranty

The electric components of an e-Bike are also included in the warranty, though generally for a shorter duration. Most commonly, brands guarantee the motor and battery for the first two years after purchase, including any defects or malfunctions under normal use conditions. These warranties often also cover the controller and display. Electrical issues can arise and are not uncommon, so it’s essential to have a good warranty and access to local service centers or dealerships that can handle the claim and make repairs.

E-Bike warranty on mechanical components

The warranty terms for mechanical issues on e-Bikes are typically similar to those covering electrical parts, with a 2-year warranty on parts subject to normal use and maintenance. The warranty on parts applies to components like brakes, drivetrain, rear suspension linkage components, bearings, rocker link, certain accessories, and wheels. Some brands provide a direct warranty on these mechanical parts, while other brands like Cannondale, state that the parts are covered by the original manufacturer’s stated warranty (i.e., Shimano, SRAM, etc.). These parts are only under warranty with normal use and maintenance, meaning the issue needs to be a defect rather than damage sustained from a crash or improper use.

Common terms of pre-owned e-Bike warranties

Certified pre-owned retailers may provide fresh warranties on electric bikes after the reconditioning process. For example, Upway offers a robust 1-year warranty on all refurbished models, which covers electrical and mechanical issues. Most refurbished e-Bike warranties do not typically include warranties for the frame since the bike was previously owned.

When buying used, warranties may transfer to the new owner, but proof of original purchase is required, and often the warranty has expired anyway. With Trek bikes, subsequent owners are entitled to a 3-year warranty from the date of the original purchase on the frame and fork, though it does not cover parts such as wheels, suspension forks, or drivetrain components. Trek also manages its own marketplace for certified pre-owned bikes, called Red Barn Refresh, and provides a lifetime warranty on frames and 2 years for parts.

What e-Bike warranties do not cover

Warranties have their limits and won’t cover everything. Keep in mind that a warranty is typically voided by any modification of the frame, fork, or components.

E-Bike warranties do not cover:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Improper assembly
  • Corrosion
  • Improper maintenance
  • Installation of components, parts, or accessories not originally intended for or compatible with the bicycle as sold
  • Damage or failure due to accident, misuse, abuse, or neglect
  • Cosmetic scratches or non-structural blemishes
