Upway’s official arrival on the West Coast has made a big splash, recently launching the new LA UpCenter in Redondo Beach. The exciting expansion is a crucial milestone in Upway’s continuing growth in the US and supports e-Bike ridership in the Golden State, already an important market for electric bikes. Here’s a comprehensive look at what the LA UpCenter launch means for Upway, including insight from company leaders and the latest data on Upway’s growth.

Why the LA UpCenter launch is big news

The recent launch of the UpCenter in Los Angeles marks Upway’s coast-to-coast reach in the domestic e-Bike market. Expanding beyond our New York City UpCenter, having an UpCenter in California is crucial for Upway’s growth on the West Coast and across the US.

Cycling and e-Bikes are popular across the state, but Los Angeles is an especially fitting location for Upway’s newest UpCenter. In the LA area, 54% of all transportation trips are under 5 miles, meaning electric bikes can be a practical solution to replace cars for short urban journeys. In addition, California's e-Bike ridership is on the rise and the state recently introduced its e-Bike incentive program. Upway’s local presence means we can now collaborate as an approved partner in the statewide voucher program.

“California is by far our most important market—more e-Bikes are sold here than anywhere else in the U.S. Being in Los Angeles puts us right at the heart of the country’s e-mobility movement. The LA UpCenter brings us closer to both customers and partners, allows us to offer better prices and faster delivery, and helps us lead the shift toward making circular, affordable e-Bikes the norm in America."

California & LA are key to Upway’s goals

Having boots on the ground (or bikes, rather) in the Golden State significantly bolsters Upway’s current operations and opportunities for growth. California is our fastest-growing state, with demand rising sharply year over year. In 2024, bike sales in California grew by more than 150% compared to the previous year, making it our single largest market in the U.S. This growth has significantly outpaced other regions and highlights California’s unique role as a leader in e-Bike adoption.

California is also home to important bike brands and Upway partners, including Aventon, Super73, Rad Power Bikes, Pedal, and more. Upway’s entire online catalog includes more than 200 brands available. Upway’s trade-in program spans over 500 retailers nationwide and a stronger presence in California enables us to boost those local partnerships.

The LA UpCenter facilitates faster delivery, free pick-ups for trade-ins, and better prices for West Coast customers. And the benefits aren’t only in the short-term— the 2028 Olympic Games in LA will propel urban mobility innovation in the area and Upway is looking forward to contributing to that transformation.

Impact on the circular economy and mobility industry

The launch of the LA UpCenter plays a part in Upway’s larger vision of sustainability. Since Upway’s introduction to the US market, we’ve processed over 10,000 electric bikes, giving them a second life and preventing them from going unused or potentially ending up in landfills. These milestones contribute to a broader global mission of refurbishing more than 50,000 e-Bikes globally and hitting our target of 1 million e-Bikes by 2035. Upway’s presence in 8 countries and $65 million in raised funds from top investors such as Sequoia, Exor, and Korelya fuel these ambitious objectives.

Compared to standard bicycles, e-Bikes can be an even more effective replacement for car trips, especially on longer rides or while pulling heavy cargo. Making the switch helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from gas-powered (and electric-powered) cars. The energy consumption of an electric bike translates to an average CO2 emission amount of around 3.5g per mile. In comparison, a car emits about 240g of CO2 per passenger mile and public transportation emits 80-176g of CO2 per passenger mile.

“Last year alone, over 1 million e-bikes were sold in the US, and yet the second-hand market is still in its infancy. We are extremely excited for the launch of our LA UpCenter, this step not only will allow to scale our operations but also will allow us to move closer to our partners. We are committed to strengthen our existing relationships and establish new ones and make circular mobility a reality for more people in the United States”

Operations & customer benefits

The new LA UpCenter is not only good for Upway, it’s great for our customers, too. Our professional mechanics at an UpCenter can refurbish between four to five e-Bikes per day, meaning there is faster inventory turnover and repair completions. The LA UpCenter creates local jobs and Upway is planning to double its current team of 30 people in 2025.

Local presence in LA provides faster logistics, lower delivery costs, and free trade-in pick-ups for customers in the region. Since Upway’s launch in the US market, the average discount on an e-Bike has been 40% compared to retail prices— that means customers save around $1,000 per e-Bike, with our best deals offering savings of up to 60%.

UpCenter location: why Redondo Beach?

The UpCenter is located in Redondo Beach in Los Angeles County. It’s close to Inglewood and other blue-collar talent hubs, including the nearby boardwalk area where e-Bikes are so practical and popular. Indeed, “redondo” actually means “circular” and it's a well-rounded, ideal location that checks all the boxes for Upway’s LA UpCenter. The location is safe, operationally efficient, and well-connected to Interstate 405 and we have a great relationship with the trusted landlord, enabling scalable growth.

The launch of the LA UpCenter is the latest chapter in Upway’s path to becoming the leading second-hand e-Bike platform in the US and globally. The strategic California location will allow Upway to expand sourcing partnerships and foster stronger relationships with top retailers and brands. Los Angeles is our most recent milestone in this upward journey, and we are excited to continue to grow both the US team and potentially expand to additional cities.
