Specialized vs Cube: Premium Performance or Smart Value?

Written by: Robbie Ferri | February 27, 2026 Time to read 6 min

If you love data-driven design, refined ride quality, and that polished “just right” feel, one brand clearly stands out. If value, spec, and stretching your budget matter more, the other makes a strong argument.

Specialized vs Cube: Brand Histories

Both these brands have very different backgrounds, and it’s good to discuss this before going into the finer details. Specialized was started in California in 1974. Cube was founded in Germany in 1993.

Specialized was all about pushing boundaries, positioning itself as an innovator based on rider feedback, and focusing on continuous improvement. This still continues to this day, and with amazing bikes, they have been very successful.

Cube's focus was very different. It was efficient manufacturing and great engineering. With this, they could offer excellent products at reduced prices, making them a very competitive brand. With Cube being as big as it is, this has quite clearly worked.

Proprietary Technology vs Outsourcing Systems

One of the biggest differences between these two brands is the technology they use. They have a very different approach. The main difference comes in the motors and the batteries.

Specialized uses the Turbo system, which was designed by Bosch for Specialized and fine-tuned on their guidance. They make an electric bike system with an incredible natural ride feel and very smooth delivery. Parts and servicing only really come from Specialized keeping it all in-house.

Cube outsources its motors and batteries from Shimano and Bosch. Already advanced technology designed for and used by multiple different brands. Very reliable, excellent delivery, and parts and spares are very easy to get as they are stocked in multiple places, and many bike mechanics can work on these systems.

This is Specialized’s way of being innovative and separating itself from the competition, and Cube's way of making more savings to pass on to the customer.

Ride Feel and Performance

Specialized is all about performance and ride feel. Everything Specialized does is focused on this. The motor and battery are lightweight and are placed to provide a very low center of gravity. The power delivery is smooth, making you feel stronger and more confident.

Cube still offers an excellent ride feel, and the Shimano and Bosch motors are incredible. They are a little heavier and feel more punchy. The difference is small here, but there’s a noticeable feel to it all.

They both share similar components, as hydraulic disc brakes seem to be on most models, but you won't find carbon rims unless you are looking at the top models. The suspension system drastically changes the ride performance and feel of the mountain bikes.

Long Term Ownership and Pricing

It’s good to discuss long-term ownership and pricing. When getting a Specialized your not only going to be left with excellent resale value long term. Over the time you have the bike, most servicing can be done at any bike shop, but anything to do with the motor and battery will have to be done with Specialized.

Cube, you will find the resale value won't be as high in the long term, but over the time you own the bike, you will find servicing is much cheaper, and it can be done anywhere that works on electric bikes.

Pricing

Both brands are excellent value for money. Specialized is more general for similar products, but it is very advanced in emerging technologies. Cube has always been an amazing value for money, and you'll spend less, but it won't always have that incredible technology. Both are incredible value for money, there’s no denying that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Specialized bikes usually more expensive?

Specialized heavily invests in research and development, and this doesn’t come for free. They are at the cutting edge of technology, but there’s a price for that. They also resell much better.

Which brand makes better e-Bikes?

Both make excellent e-Bikes. Specialized e-Bikes tend to feel lighter, smoother, and more natural. Cube e-Bikes tend to offer more power, bigger batteries, and better range for the price.
Which brand has better resale value?
Specialized typically holds its value better on the used market. Cube resale is still good, but usually lower than that of similarly priced Specialized models.

Key Takeaways

  1. Specialized prioritises refinement and ride feel, using proprietary systems and deep R&D to create bikes that feel exceptionally polished on the road or trail.
  2. Cube prioritises value and specification, offering excellent components, powerful motors, and competitive pricing by using trusted third-party systems.
  3. The right choice isn’t about better or worse, but about whether you value feel and integration, or power and value for money.
