If you have been looking at electric bikes for a while, you would have come across the name Rad Power Bikes. They are one of the bigger e-Bike brands, and their bikes are not only well-made but also feature excellent components.

Rad Power Bikes and many other bike brands can produce error codes. These codes ensure your bike stays in perfect working order and can warn you of any faults that may be developing. In this article, we’re going to be discussing what those codes mean.

What Are Rad Power Bikes?

Before we start, it’s good to run through a little bit about who Rad Power Bikes are. Rad Power Bikes was founded in 2007 and is based in Seattle, Washington. Mike Radenbaugh was the original creator when he was converting regular bikes to electric bikes.

It has grown over the years into North America’s biggest direct-to-consumer e-Bike brand. It now designs and builds e-Bikes in-house, and the bikes are known and trusted in the industry. Cargo bikes, such as the Radwagon, are well-known.

Rad Power Bikes unfortunately shut down. Similar brands to Rad Power Bikes are Aventon, Ride1UP, and Lectric. These all make similar Cargo bikes and commuter bikes

Complete List of Rad Power Bikes E-Bike Error Codes

Error Code 6 – Battery Undervoltage

This happens when the battery voltage has dropped too low. There are multiple causes, such as cold weather, poor power connections, or a deeply discharged or worn-out battery.

The first step is to fully recharge the battery with the original charger for the full charging time. Check any connections where the battery sits. Then refit it securely. If the error codes return, it’s best to get your battery inspected by an expert.

Error Code 10 – Battery Overvoltage

The battery voltage is above the safe operating limit. This is the opposite of a battery undervoltage and is typically linked to a battery issue or the battery management system.

Stop riding immediately and consult an expert. The issue may require a replacement battery or a professional diagnosis. Avoid further riding to prevent possible damage.

Error Code 12 – Motor Stall / Torque Sensor Error

This is a warning that the motor is under excessive load. It could be steep starts, using too high a gear with a low cadence, or the load it’s carrying might be too much, causing the motor to stall. You might even find it's an error with the torque sensor not reading correctly.

To solve this, you are going to want to turn the bike off and restart it after a few minutes' wait. Use an easier gear and reduce the level of assistance. If that doesn’t resolve the issue or get you going again, it's more than likely the torque sensor.

Error Code 15 – Controller Error

Caused by a faulty controller or corrupted firmware.

First, turn the machine off if possible. Then remove the battery for a few minutes, then reset it. Once back on, perform a full system reset. If the bike works great, just a small malfunction, if not, it might need a new controller or some expert help.

Error Code 16 – Throttle Active at Startup

Error code 16 indicates the throttle is being sensed as open when you try to start the bike. This is a safety feature to stop the bike from jolting off.

Ensure the throttle is not engaged. Restart the bike completely. If the problem continues, inspect the throttle for sticking or have the sensor replaced as needed.

Error Code 17 – Abnormal Motor Current / Wiring Fault

This means there’s a problem with the connection between the motor and the controller.

First, inspect for damaged wires or poor connections between the motor and controller. Repair any issues, then restart the bike. If the problem persists, seek expert diagnosis of the controller and motor.

Error Code 21 – Abnormal Current (General)

An abnormal current typically indicates a problem with a controller, motor, wiring, or connection. The bike is picking up that the current is just not correct.

Perform a full power cycle first. If the error persists, inspect all cables and connections. If unresolved, consult an expert for diagnosis.

Error Code 22 – Throttle Fault

When the throttle fault comes up, it usually indicates a problem with the throttle sensor. It could be a poor or broken connection, water ingress, or even damage to the sensor or throttle itself.

Inspect the throttle and cables for any damage. Next, check and clean the connections as needed. If the error remains, replace the throttle sensor.

Error Code 23 – Motor Phase Fault

A fault in the motor phase can be caused by the wiring or the phase sensors. This is usually caused by damaged or even loose cables.

Begin by inspecting motor cables and routing. Check connections for water or dirt. If the problem continues, consult an expert for further motor inspection.

Error Code 24 – Motor Hall Sensor Fault

The motor hall sensors are sending the wrong position signal. This often causes the bike to run rough or not to start at all.

A full system reset is a good way to start troubleshooting error code 24. If that doesn’t fix the problem, check all the wiring going into the motor. If that has solved the error code, it will need an expert, as this will be an internal motor fault.

Error Code 25 – Brake Switch Fault

A brake switch fault occurs when the bike senses the brake is on at startup. It’s a safety feature that cuts the motor off when the brake is applied.

Check that both brake levers are fully released. If the error persists, inspect the wiring and replace a faulty brake sensor if required.

Error Code 30 – Communication Fault

A communication fault typically comes from a problem at the controller. This could be loose wiring, damaged pins, or water ingress.

Begin by checking all connections and wiring. Remove and inspect connector pins for corrosion or bending. If no faults are found, consider replacing the controller.

Error Code 31 – Power Button Hold Fault

The power button hold fault occurs when the power button is held down too long on startup. A safety feature by Rad Power Bikes to ensure the motor or battery isn’t working when not intended.

If you see this error without powering on, inspect the power button for a sticking issue. If it occurs after powering on, restart the bike and avoid holding the button too long.

Error Code 34 – Walk Mode Disengage Fault

Error 34 occurs when the walk mode is stuck on and cannot be disengaged. It often comes from a small glitch in the control or just poor timing.

Turn off walk mode completely and restart the bike. If walk mode remains engaged, have the controller inspected for internal faults.

When It's Time To Visit A Rad Power Bikes Dealer Or Mechanic?

Although a lot of errors can be solved at home, and fixing error codes can be incredibly simple, this isn’t always the case. There will be times when you will need to see an expert at a Rad Power Bikes dealer or a good e-Bike mechanic.

Problems like sticky switches or loose connections are really easy to fix. Phase wires and anything that involves you opening up a motor or controller casing are generally not as simple. Not only do these pose an extra risk of further damaging the bike, but they also pose a risk to you.

Many Rad Power Bikes come with a two-year warranty. In this case, we can’t stress the importance of taking it to the dealer enough. Unfortunately, if you start tampering with the bike and then go to the dealer later, the warranty is often voided.

How Do I Prevent E-Bike Error Codes From Coming Up?

Preventing e-Bike error codes from coming up is actually a lot simpler than you might think. Here’s our top tips.

  • Keep your bike clean: Clean connections and well-ventilated motors work much better.
  • Update firmware: Up-to-date firmware keeps the bike bug-free, running smoothly.
  • Regular checks: When washing the bike, check for damage to cables and other parts.
  • Regular servicing: Makes a huge difference to components and bike longevity.
  • Learn about batteries: So many error codes come from poorly maintained batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still ride my Rad Power Bike with an error code?

Key Takeaways

  1. Rad Power Bikes use error codes to protect not just the bike but the rider. Often, detecting issues before they cause serious damage.
  2. Many common error codes are linked to the voltage, poor connections, or just simple sensors and can often be fixed with a simple reset or inspection.
  3. Battery-related faults are typically quite common on e-Bikes, but it’s not something to overly worry about, as many of these are simple fixes.
