A Gazelle Ultimate E-Bike
One of the most difficult things bike brands struggle with is making a bike that can do it all. Commuting in the week, adventure riding on the weekend, and touring on the holidays. Remarkably, the Gazelle Ultimate seems to pull this off really well.

In this article, I am going to tell you all about Gazelle's most popular bike and why you might want to invest your money in it. I’ll tell you what makes it amazing and what you might not like, and compare it with bikes from other brands.

Although this might look a bit overwhelming, the Gazelle Ultimate comes in many different models. This chart shows each one separately, as they are quite different from one another, not so much in price but in what they are for.

The Ultimate C5+ HMB is focused more on commuting and city riding, the Ultimate C380 HMB on comfort and ease of use, and the Ultimate T11 HMB on off-road riding and sporty performance. Gazelle in general use this legend.

  • HMB = Bosch mid-drive motor.
  • C7/C8/C380 = Type of gearing.
  • T10 = Touring bike with 10-speed derailleur gears.
  • Elite = Higher specification.
  • Belt = Belt drive instead of a chain.

What Is Gazelle?

Gazelle has been around since 1892, making them one of the oldest bike brands. They focus on premium builds and quality. If you are looking for a bike that will last, with no corners cut, and be really fun to ride, choose a Gazelle. They mainly focus on commuters and comfort bikes such as;

  • Medeo (Commuter)
  • Arroyo (Comfort Cruiser)
  • Eclipse (Explorer)
  • Avignon (Tourer)
  • Grenoble (Everyday Comfort)

What's The Gazelle Ultimate Like To Ride?

Let’s start simple and discuss what you can expect when riding a Gazelle Ultimate. The ride is seamless, and that is one of the best things about Gazelle. The Bosch motor delivers smoothly. The position is comfortable, and the priority is definitely on the ride experience.

They are perfect for beginners, and for me, they give you the confidence to really enjoy an electric bike. They are not like a moped. It’s like a normal bike, but you have the legs of a Tour de France rider. Perfect for anyone from beginners to cycling experts.

What Are The Components Like On The Gazelle Ultimate?

The components are fantastic. If there’s one thing Gazelle just gets right, it’s not cutting corners anywhere and equipping bikes with just high-quality premium components.

Mechanical Components

Starting with the mechanical components. The gearing comes mainly from Shimano and Enviolo. Two top brands for gearing. They tend to use a belt drive on commuter and comfort bikes and a mountain bike groupset on trekking bikes, both fantastic choices in my expert opinion.

The brakes are one of the many things companies want to go cheap on, but Gazelle doesn’t. They come with hydraulic disc brakes, which, in my opinion, are a must and help you stop quickly with extra power, and the suspension fork is a really nice, much-needed touch.

Electrical Components

Gazelle mainly uses Bosch mid-drive motors, which are excellent and generally superior to hub motors. They are known for excellent feel and reliability. We love this, and it’s a fantastic route to go down. The Bosch Performance Line offers 75 Nm of torque, and the Bosch Performance Line CX offers 85 Nm of torque.

The battery ranges do differ depending on the battery you choose. The smaller 500Wh to 625Wh batteries are lighter and offer around 90 miles of estimated range, while the larger 800Wh batteries offer over 100 miles of estimated range. Personally, for real-world riding, I would assume you will lose around 20% of range, since the estimate is so rough.

Is The Gazelle Ultimate Good Value For Money?

The Gazelle Ultimate is fantastic value for money, with prices ranging from $ 4,000 to $ 6,000 brand-new. It’s important to understand that you are buying a premium e-Bike here, and the Gazelle is well-equipped compared to many of its competitors.

You are paying more than other bikes, but you will get a better experience, a bike that will last longer, and better resale value in the years to come. The premium step-through commuter market is highly competitive, but Gazelle just does it so well.
