The daily grind of commuting and office work is the ultimate test for a folding electric bike. Some models can’t hack it— they are too heavy or too large for easy portability in the city— while other models are actually compact enough to fit under your desk.

Amid tons of options, there are only a few select folding e-Bikes that are both quick to fold and sufficiently small to comfortably squeeze into an elevator and take up limited space at the office. I’ve crunched the numbers and calculated the folded dimensions to find the best folding electric bikes that fit in tight spots.

Folding e-Bikes come in all shapes and sizes (and weights)

There’s actually quite a range when it comes to the sizes and weights of electric folding bikes. They can all collapse down into a smaller unit, but those minimum dimensions can vary significantly. The larger ones can easily fit inside a car trunk, so you don’t have to use a bike rack, but they can’t be taken on a cramped train or bus. And the smallest models— folding bike brand Brompton is the leader here— take up impressively little space and can fit under a desk, be carried upstairs, or roll around a crowded transit station.

As you’ll notice, Brompton is unmatched in this category, but there are few other models that try to get close. I’ll list the dimensions of each bike when folded so you can get an idea of how much space it takes up, as well as the total volume in cubic inches to easily compare models.

Of course, under a desk is not the only place you can store a folding e-Bike, but it’s a good metric with which to judge the most compact models. There’s tough competition between the best folding electric bikes for commuting, and I’m here to keep them honest, demanding top-quality rides for us daily pedalers.

Folding Electric Bikes That Can Actually Fit Under Your Desk

Brompton P Line

Brompton P Line folding electric bike

Brompton could be considered the gold standard when it comes to folding bikes. This iconic British brand specializes in high-end, ultra-compact models built for urban life. The P Line series of electric folding bikes is 20% lighter than the C Line, featuring a premium titanium and steel frame instead of the standard all-steel construction. There are 4-speed and 12-speed options as well as versions with a mid-height or high handlebar.

There’s a 321 Wh front-mounted battery that’s detachable and easy to carry, allowing the bike to fold down just as compactly as the non-electric model. The 250W hub motor sits inside the front wheel, and small rollers near the seat post make it easy to wheel around when folded. The entire bike weighs only 35 pounds, so you can comfortably roll it around the station, office, or carry it up a few stairs without issue.

The folding dimensions are 25.3" x 23'' x 10.6''. This corresponds to a volume of around 6,168 cubic inches, amazingly small for a folding bike and even more impressive for an electric bike. Along with the C Line model, this bike has the smallest folded footprint on this list.

Brompton C Line

The Brompton C Line is the brand’s original electric folding bike with an all-steel frame. The premium construction includes mudguards, Dynamo lighting, and folding pedals, and an advanced folding mechanism that’s super quick to use and ultra-compact. The C Line model shares the same power specs as the lighter P Line series and build options regarding gearing and handlebar height.

The C Line is slightly more affordable since there’s no fancy titanium. There are small 16” wheels, a 250W front hub motor, and a 321 Wh removable battery pack. Again, the folding dimensions are 25.3" x 23'' x 10.6'', resulting in a total volume when folded of 6,168 cubic inches. If space is limited at the office and you’re chasing the best folding e-Bike out there, Brompton is the right choice.

GoCycle G3+

GoCycle G3+ folding e-Bike

I’ve shared high praise for the futuristic GoCycle G3+ folding electric bike before, but this innovative model loses points when I think about using it at the office. It’s impressively lightweight, powerful, and elegant, which are all major draws, but the folding mechanism is complicated and cumbersome.

The folding dimensions are relatively small— the second smallest on this list— at 30.7” x 14.6” x 22.8”. That’s a volume of 10,219 cubic inches, but the process to collapse it down takes a long time and involves removing pieces that can easily be misplaced. It’s a modular setup where users can remove the wheels and seatpost, which can offer flexibility for storage, but I prefer a simpler foldable design. If you love this bike, it can save space at work, but the complex folding process may not be as practical as you think, though GoCycle’s newer models may bring improvements.

Dahon K-One Hub Drive

The Dahon K-One Hub Drive has the next smallest folding size on this list, coming in at 33” x 15” x 26” for a folded volume of 12,870 cubic inches. Close in weight to the GoCycle G3+, this e-Bike weighs a respectable 40 pounds and has a 250W rear hub motor to assist your ride up to 20 mph. I also appreciate the aesthetics of this model with fairly clean lines and slim tube shapes— style in the city is always important in my book.

Tern Vektron P9 & S10

Tern Vektron S10 folding e-Bike

Tern is another top name when it comes to practical electric bikes, whether it's cargo e-Bikes or folding models. And it’s that utility and cargo influence that slightly beef up the brand’s electric folding bikes, sacrificing smallness for a bit more comfort and carrying capacity. And considering there’s an extended rear rack and large battery, the S10 and older P9 models still fold down to a decent 16.1” × 33.9” × 26.8” size, summing to 14,627 cubic inches.

Consider the S10 model if you’re after a more utility-oriented folding e-Bike, able to carry plenty of cargo but still skewing towards the small side of things to save space in crowded cities, offices, or apartments.

Honorable mentions

There are plenty of other folding e-Bikes on Upway’s catalog, but they don’t quite fold down as small as the models mentioned above or compared to regular folding bikes. They are, however, more affordable and can easily fit inside a car for simple transport. Models like the Aventon Sinch and Lectric folding e-Bikes are significantly heavier and larger. The popular Pedego Latch comes closest to the space-saving models included in this list with 17" x 28" x 36" folded dimensions, or a volume of 17,136 cubic inches.
