Good things are worth taking good care of, and staying on top of electric bike maintenance will save you money and headaches in the long run. Having an idea of how much tune-ups and e-Bike servicing costs, as well as the recommended maintenance schedule, will keep you on track and ready to ride. Here’s everything you need to know about electric bike maintenance.

Electric bike vs. standard bicycle maintenance

In general, electric bike repairs and maintenance are extremely similar to those of standard, non-motorized bicycles. The most common fixes are the same because they have to do with the mechanical parts of the bike, such as brake adjustment, brake pad or tire replacement, and component installation. And frequent washes are a great way to keep your bike as healthy as possible.

However, maintaining an electric bike can be more costly and complicated because of the electrical parts. For many tasks, bike shops charge per hour, and the average labor rate for working on electric bikes is between $135/hour to $165/hour, significantly higher than traditional bikes.

One major cost can be replacing the battery after several years of use, which typically costs around $500 to $800. That said, the annual cost of maintaining an e-Bike is normally much more affordable. I would estimate the average cost to be around $200 to $300, including a tune-up, possible small part replacements, and at-home materials to wash your e-Bike

How often should I service my e-Bike?

Regular servicing is a crucial part of electric bike maintenance, but the recommended schedule depends on how much you ride. Professional bike shops, such as our partners over at eBikes of New England, recommend that frequent riders consider a basic tune-up every 3 to 4 months, or every 1,000 miles. If you are a less frequent rider— once a week or only on weekends— you can likely get away with a tune-up once per year or riding season. If you are a competent home mechanic, you can stretch the time between tune-ups, too.

Cost of Electric Bike Tune-Ups

Getting a tune-up means you’ll have a professional look over your entire bike and make adjustments where necessary. There are a few tiers to choose from, depending on how much love your bike needs.

In general, a basic electric bike tune-up will cost around $100 to $200. It likely includes a full inspection, brake adjustment, shifting adjustment, chain lubrication, and basic inspection of electrical components.

A more comprehensive or major tune-up can cost in the ballpark of $300+. In addition to the services provided in the basic tune-up, the mechanics will also diagnose any issues with the motor and battery, update firmware, true wheels, clean the drivetrain, overhaul hubs and bottom brackets, and check torque specs for key bolts.

Services and prices will vary from shop to shop, and there are often discounts if you bought your e-Bike from that shop or have signed up for a service package or membership with the shop.

Here’s the service menu from Propel Bikes, one of Upway’s bike shop partners in Brooklyn, NY, and Long Beach, CA:

  • Basic Tune-up: $200, recommended for every 500 to 1,000 miles
  • Standard Tune-up: $365, recommended for every 1,200 to 3,000 miles or 6-12 months, depending on use
  • Major Tune-up: $530, recommended for every 2,000 to 6,000 miles or 6-18 months, depending on use

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I maintain my bike?

We recommend checking that your tires are inflated before every ride, but other components can be inspected after every few rides. It’s also a good idea to complete a tune-up every riding season. Learn more in our other blog about how often e-Bikes need maintenance.

Should I charge my e-Bike after every ride?

Yes— keeping the battery fully or nearly fully charged ensures you have enough range for your next range and maintains optimal battery charge levels. Modern batteries are much better equipped to avoid problems from overcharging.

How do I keep my e-Bike battery healthy?

Store the battery at or around room temperature and avoid prolonged exposure to the elements or extreme cold which can decrease performance. For long-term storage, try to keep the charge level between 30%-80%. Charging the battery after every ride is perfectly fine, too.

Key Takeaways

  1. E-Bike tune-ups range from $100 to over $500, depending on the service level and complexity of the bike's electrical components.
  2. Most riders benefit from a tune-up every 1,000 miles or 6–12 months, though frequent riders may need more regular servicing.
  3. Annual maintenance costs average $200–$300, making proactive care more affordable than major repairs or battery replacements later on.
