Ever hit a pothole at speed and briefly tensed, feeling your soul leave your body as your spine compresses into your helmet? Yeah, it's not nice, and it does make you question your e-Bike and the road you are on.

There’s a great solution, and that comes in the shape of a suspension fork. Not only does it help you with these potholes, but it also makes trails and general day-to-day riding so much better. This article will tell you about them and much more.

What Types Of E-Bikes Come With Suspension Forks?

Not all electric bikes come with suspension forks, but they are becoming increasingly common as e-Bikes get faster, heavier, and more capable. Here are the types of bikes you will typically find with suspension forks.

  • Electric mountain bikes (eMTBs)
  • Hybrid e-Bikes
  • Trekking e-Bikes
  • Cargo e-Bikes
  • Fat tire e-Bikes
  • Urban commuter e-Bikes.
  • Full-suspension eMTBs (Front fork and rear shock)
  • Lightweight road and gravel e-Bikes
  • Budget supermarket e-Bikes

What Are The Different Types Of Suspension Forks?

There are actually different types of suspension forks you can get on e-Bikes, it’s not just hardtail (single front suspension) or full suspension (front and rear suspension). The most common are coil and air suspension forks. Here’s what they are and what they do.

Coil Suspension Forks

Coil forks are the most traditional suspension method. It’s when they use a spring to absorb bumps on the road or trails. They are very affordable, comfortable, and even for a budding home mechanic, not awful to work on. Mainly seen on budget bikes. Coil spring forks are not lightweight and offer only a little adjustability.

Air Suspension Forks

Air spring suspension uses pressured air instead of a spring. It makes them super adjustable, lighter, and much better in terms of performance. These are the kinds of forks you will see on premium bikes such as e-MTBs and trekking bikes. They offer amazing control, comfort, and a really special responsiveness.

Short Travel Forks vs Long Travel Forks

When it comes to suspension, the amount of travel you get makes a big difference in how the bike rides. Depending on the type of bike you have, the typical travel distance can vary a lot. For example, a lightweight commuter or hybrid bike might have as little as 30-80mm of travel.

If you are going to be doing performance riding, such as ripping up tough trails, then you need a little more. Enduro and downhill e-MTBs have around 140-180mm of travel. For drops and to absorb large impacts with special compression damping.

Long-travel forks typically provide 140mm–180mm of travel and are built for serious off-road riding. They are commonly used on full-suspension eMTBs because they absorb large impacts with excellent rebound damping, improve grip, and provide much more control on technical trails.

There are also some sizes in between, such as 80-140mm for XC mountain biking or hybrid bikes. You can really dial in the ride with the right suspension, or with a rigid fork, you can completely remove it altogether.

Why Does Suspension Matter On An E-Bike?

E-Bikes are much heavier, go faster, and go much further. They are ridden on a wide range of terrain and require a little more thought. Here’s why suspension is a must on an e-Bike.

  • Improves comfort
  • Better control
  • More grip
  • Safer at higher speeds
  • Great for off-road riding
  • More confidence for new riders
  • Protects the bike

What Are The Best Suspension Forks For E-Bikes?

Can I Upgrade My E-Bike Forks?

Yes, it is a great upgrade to make and makes a big difference to the riding. You need to ensure the headtube is the right size and the forks will work for your braking system. We recommend that, when making this upgrade, you see a bike shop.

Why Is Suspension So Expensive?

Suspension is very complex, and the components that are so light and carry such a heavy load require high-precision engineering. Upgraded forks are not cheap, and you can soon hit the thousands for performance forks. You do get what you pay for, I must say. Spend a lot to get amazing riding and rebound.

It is always worth considering, instead of upgrading your suspension on the current bike, which might not match the geometry, investing in a new preloved bike from somewhere such as Upway. Pre-owned bikes with a mechanical and electrical inspection, a year's warranty, and excellent customer service at hand. Why not check out our bikes?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all e-Bikes need suspension forks?

Lightweight road and urban e-Bikes can work perfectly well with rigid forks or suspension forks. Suspension becomes much more important on rough roads, gravel, and trails, and for heavier bikes, but it's not essential.

Are air forks better than coil forks?

Generally, I would prefer air forks on my bike. Air forks are lighter, more adjustable, and offer better performance, although coil forks are cheaper and perfectly fine for casual stuff.
Can suspension improve grip and braking?
Suspension helps keep the tire in contact with the ground, improving traction and braking performance. Although it looks awesome, airtime isn't always good.

Key Takeaways

  1. Suspension forks massively improve your riding: Comfort, grip, and control on heavier and faster e-Bikes.
  2. Air forks offer the best performance and adjustability: Coil forks are more affordable and simpler.
  3. The right amount of suspension travel: It depends entirely on your riding style, terrain, and e-Bike type.
