With great power comes great responsibility. The pedal-assisted boost, faster speeds, and heavier weight of electric bikes can pose a safety risk for riders who aren’t ready or mature enough to ride safely. For this reason, the majority of US states have a minimum age requirement for operating an e-Bike. At Upway, we see firsthand that riders of all ages love electric bikes, though the average age of an Upway customer is 45 years old. E-Bikes are a great option for everyone, from responsible young riders to seniors returning to cycling.

At what age can you ride an e-Bike in the US?

In the U.S., there’s no federal minimum age for e-Bikes. Most states set the limit between 14–16 years, depending on class. Class 3 e-Bikes typically require riders to be 16+.

E-Bikes are powerful machines and can be incredibly heavy, especially for young riders, and require adequate strength, bike handling skills, and maturity to ride. This is the rationale behind most states’ minimum age requirement. Many states have no age limit for Class 1  and Class 2 e-Bikes, but require riders to be older than 16 to operate faster Class 3 electric bikes.

Age restrictions by e-Bike class

For the states that have age requirements to operate an e-Bike, the limit is based on the three classes of electric bikes. Class 1 and Class 2 e-Bikes have a maximum speed of 20 mph, with Class 2 models including a throttle mode. Class 3 e-Bikes can reach a top speed of 28 mph and are subject to tighter restrictions. Many states only impose age requirements for the use of those faster Class 3 e-Bikes.

Safe riding is more than just rider age

Staying safe while riding an e-Bike involves a whole lot more than meeting the age requirement, if there is one. There are lots of e-Bike laws in the US designed to improve safety and precisely define what can be considered a legal electric bike. Always follow your state and local area’s regulations when it comes to age requirements, helmet laws, trail access, and rules of the road.

  • State and city laws: Check the specific regulations for your area for the most up-to-date information.
  • E-Bike class: Top allowed speed and trail access are typically based on the three-class e-Bike system.
  • Safety and maturity: Rider maturity and bike handling skills are more important than age. Safe riding habits and good decision-making are key for young riders or teens who want to ride an e-Bike.
