The pandemic bike boom is old news at this point, and it’s time for an update. I’m interested in the most recent data on bicycle ridership and market growth to see if that boom has stuck around for good or continues to rollercoaster on the heels of a couple of irregular years for the bike industry. Here’s a look at the numbers from recent studies and Upway’s Trend Report 2025 that offer clues about the future of electric bikes.

The e-Bike market is still booming

The past several years have been full of ups and downs for the bicycle industry as a whole, recovering from pandemic-caused supply chain issues, surging demand, surplus stock, and economic uncertainties. However, the e-Bike slice of the market has fared better, powered by faster growth and exciting new tech developments. More people than ever are buying and using electric bikes.

PeopleForBikes
reports that “e-Bikes are the number one growth driver for the bike industry over the past five years… responsible for 63% of the growth in dollar sales of all bicycles between 2019 and 2023”. Upway’s Trend Report 2025 shares that the global e-Bike market was valued at USD 19.05 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5% from 2023 to 2030.

Split up according to e-Bike type, in 2022, the “trekking” or hybrid e-Bike segment accounted for the largest share (49.5%) of e-Bike sales revenue. The cargo e-Bike segment is projected to experience significant growth, with a CAGR of 15.4% through 2030, driven by the increasing demand for e-Bikes used to transport goods such as last-mile delivery.

More bikes and more bike riders

Market growth isn’t the only thing we are interested in, however. The much more important metric is the increasing number of e-Bikes and riders that are out there pedaling around. The trend toward regular bike and e-Bike adoption is hugely positive, with several e-Bike hotspots in the US enjoying the fastest-growing e-Bike ridership.

Another PeopleForBikes report found that US bicycle use in 2024 is up 32% compared to 2018 levels and cited a study from the Physical Activity Council, concluding that, in 2023, 19.4% of Americans who rode a bike at least once reported using an e-Bike, up from 7.8% in 2021. Simply put, more people are riding bikes and hopping on electric bikes.

Part of this increase is that electric bikes actually motivate people to ride their bikes more often and for longer. A 2019 study showed that “the electric assist of the e-Bike helps to generate more trips, longer trips, and different types of bicycle trips”. This 2020 study reported that “people who buy an e-Bike more than double their use of bicycles for transport… people who purchased an e-Bike increased their bicycle use from 2.1 to 9.2 km per day on average”.

And there’s even more reason to get excited about electric bikes these days. Many US states and cities are offering some type of voucher to encourage residents to purchase electric bikes, lowering the price. Studies like this recent 2024 paper prove that “e-Bike incentives are powerful levers to shift behavior... [and] point-of-purchase discounts are the most influential at shifting behavior”. Vouchers like the California E-Bike Incentive are succeeding in making e-Bikes more accessible for income-qualified residents and encouraging sustainable transport across the state.

E-Bikes are on the rise, and that’s great, but sustainability is a crucial part of the equation. Upway’s focus on affordability, sustainability, and accessibility is a unique advantage within the industry, giving new life to second-hand electric bikes. By reconditioning pre-owned models, we save up to 60% of an e-Bike’s environmental footprint, the large portion that comes from the initial product manufacturing.

More and more Americans say that living a sustainable lifestyle is important to them and are shopping secondhand at higher rates than ever, as we shared in Upway’s Trend Report this year.

Our large collection of new and used electric bikes offers savings up to 60% for consumers on their favorite models as well as reducing their environmental impact— now, that’s a win-win. Over the past five years, Upway has given new life to over 50,000 electric bikes, and we continue to make electric mobility more accessible to everyone!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do e-Bikes weigh?

Most standard e-Bikes weigh between 20 and 25 kilograms, or around 45 to 55 pounds. Performance-oriented e-MTBs are on the lighter side despite the added suspension, ranging from 15 to 28 kilograms. Folding e-Bikes designed for commuters usually weigh around 20 kilograms for portability. On the heavier end, electric cargo bikes tip the scales at up to 40 kilograms.

How often should I maintain my bike?

We recommend checking that your tires are inflated before every ride, but other components can be inspected after every few rides. It’s also a good idea to complete a tune-up every riding season. Learn more in our other blog about how often e-Bikes need maintenance.
