Some people would consider “weight weenie” a pejorative term, a cyclist too obsessed with shaving grams off their bike in the pursuit of more speed. I think this sour connotation is waning, though, as more and more of us agree that saving weight is a good thing, especially on electric bikes.

The profile of the famed “weight weenie” is probably familiar to many of us. I think my dad is a retired weight weenie, having previously drilled holes in his bike’s shift levers to save just a few grams. He’s less paranoid about weight now— and entering his e-Bike era— and fits the profile I’m thinking about. He’s used to performance bikes but worried about the efficiency and weight of e-Bikes, searching for a lightweight setup with only a moderate boost— he still wants to provide plenty of pedal power. The excellent e-Bikes below may be the perfect fit.

Best Electric Bikes Under 35 lbs.

While most cyclists don’t require race-level specs on their everyday bikes, nor need the lightest-ever e-Bike, there are some key benefits. Featherweight models feel just as nimble as non-motorized bikes and ride ultra-efficiently on the lower assist levels. And these traits are top priorities for plenty of riders, especially if they are used to lightweight, high-performance bikes like road bikes.

Many of the very lightest electric bikes are road e-Bikes and gravel e-Bikes. These performance models have compact motors and small batteries since riders will input a solid amount of power themselves, lowering the overall weight. There are other weight-saving parts and super-sleek frames, too.

Here’s a look at the best lightweight electric bikes under 35 lbs. that may convince even the most devout weight weenies out there!

Trek Domane+ ALR

Momentum Lafree E+ electric bike

The Trek Domane+ is the electrified version of one of the most popular road bikes on the market, providing a solid boost without sacrificing ride feel or efficiency. Even close up, this streamlined model doesn’t look like an e-Bike and hides its superpowers well, and that’s even harder to do with a mid-drive motor compared to a hub-drive motor. The Domane+ is powered by a Fazua Evation mid-drive unit— a brand known for its lightweight products— and a small 252 Wh battery pack hidden in the downtube.

The Domane+ weighs in at a very slim 33 lbs., undercutting nearly all other e-Bikes out there. Lightweight status for an e-Bike is anything under 45 lbs., after all. This model provides Class 1 speeds of up to 20 mph and relies on the famed groupset of the people, my favorite Shimano 105. The performance road bike you already loved, now with a boost.

Weight: 33 lbs.

Pinarello Dyodo Force 22

Cannondale Tesoro Neo SL EQ

To be honest, up until recently, I didn’t even know Pinarello made electric bikes. I’m used to seeing Pinarello road bikes almost exclusively on TV, watching pro races like the Tour de France, or being ridden by the occasional weekend warrior with deep pockets. These carbon race bikes have the fanciest parts, lightweight components, and a silhouette that screams speed.

The Pinarello Dyodo Force 22 version weighs just 26 pounds— that’s crazy. There are plenty of standard bicycles that weigh that much, or more. The Dyodo features a Mahle X35 rear hub motor with 40 Nm of torque and a top pedal assist speed of 20 mph. Typical of road e-Bikes, the battery is on the smaller size at only 250 Wh to save weight and space. You’d be forgiven for thinking this model was a standard bike until you start riding, thanks to the ultra-sleek design.

Pivot E-Vault

Bianchi E-Omnia C-Type Deore 10 e-Bike

Featherweight specs aren’t reserved only for electric road bike. The adventure-ready Pivot E-Vault is an electric gravel bike that punches way above its weight with a premium drive unit and Class 3 e-Bike pace of up to 28 mph! The carbon frame keeps weight to a minimum, built around the Fazua Evation Ride 50 mid-drive motor.

For gravel enthusiasts, the E-Vault has gravel-specific Shimano GRX 11-speed gearing, generous tire clearance, and powerful hydraulic disc brakes. The entire setup only weighs 31 lbs., ensuring efficiency is at an all-time high. I’m already thinking about the extended routes and pedal-assisted expeditions I could do with this lightweight beast!

Weight: 31 lbs.

Orbea Gain M20

Orbea Gain M20 electric bike

Orbea is an underrated brand in my book, so the Spanish manufacturer can often surprise us, and the lightweight Orbea Gain M20 is a heavy-hitter. Weighing only 29 lbs., it’s also the sleekest bike on this list and looks even slimmer than most non-motorized road bikes out there today.

I don’t even know how the battery can be so streamlined and compact, but I can at least locate the small but powerful Ebikemotion X-Series rear hub motor that assists up to 20 mph. It’s outfitted with Shimano Ultegra, a 244 Wh battery, light road wheels, and hydraulic disc brakes. If you’re searching for marginal gains on your e-Bike, the Orbea Gain M20 is a home run.
