Bike touring sounds epic, doesn’t it? Until your three hours in the hills are crazy steep, with a headwind pushing you further down the mountain you're climbing, and Google Maps saying, “Turn around.”

This is why e-Bikes exist, so you can avoid this situation and just have a good time. They are not going to turn you into a superhero just yet, but they will make your journey much more enjoyable and easier.

What Makes A Great Electric Touring Bike?

There aren’t many electric touring bikes on the market, and as far as great electric touring bikes go, very few. What a lot of cyclists don’t understand is that pretty much anything can be a touring bike, providing it has the right characteristics. Here’s what I look for when finding an electric bike for touring.

Comfortable

Touring bikes have to be comfortable. They need to have a relaxed geometry and a fairly upright riding position. They need to be the kind of bike you can ride for hours on end. A hybrid bike, even a right city bike, or a relaxed road bike is perfect. It doesn't have to be a full-suspension monster or one of these fat bikes to be comfortable. It's the little details that matter, such as suspension seat posts and a big headtube.

Carrying Capacity

A touring bike needs to carry a lot of gear. Pannier racks are an ideal solution for carrying clothes and supplies while you are away. Many electric bikes come with these racks, making them excellent for touring.

Large Battery Capacity

An electric touring bike needs a large capacity battery. Not only to help you ride for longer throughout the day, but also to help you carry all that gear that you will need for camping, bikepacking, or hopping from hotel to hotel. Motor power doesn't make a huge difference because, for long-distance riding, conserving is the game to play.

Right For The Job

Touring can be on the road, on trails, or even on sand. Having the right bike for the tour you are on is vital. Mountain bike or gravel bike for trail, road bike for road, and hybrid and gravel for mixed terrain. No matter what you want the bike for, we always recommend hydraulic brakes on an e-Bike for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can a touring e-Bike go?

Most touring e-bikes can cover 50–100 miles (80–160 km) depending on battery size, terrain, rider weight, and assist level. On a tour with a great distance between hotels, you do have to go easy on the assistance and use the gears properly.

Are e-Bikes good for long-distance touring?

Yes, E-Bikes are ideal for long-distance touring. They reduce fatigue, help with climbs and headwinds, and allow you to ride further while carrying luggage.
Do I need a mid-drive motor for touring?
Not necessarily, but mid-drive motors are generally better for touring because they’re more efficient, handle hills better, and feel more natural to ride.

Key Takeaways

  1. Comfort and range matter most: Look for upright geometry and at least a 500Wh battery.
  2. Motor choice matters: Mid-drive motors perform better on hills and for long rides.
  3. Match the bike to your riding style: Lightweight, powerful, or comfort-focused options all suit different types of touring.
