What are the Best E-Bike Trails in San Diego for Families and Casual Riders?
Bayshore Bikeway
At 12 miles, the Bayshore trail is a flat, relaxed riding Class 1 electric bicycle route, providing scenic views of the riverside and the downtown San Diego skyline. The route is wide and multi-use and a bike-friendly beach boardwalk, making it suitable for cargo bikes, city bikes, and families on bikes with children's trailers.
The route starts at Coronado Ferry Landing, with an early turnaround point being the Coronado Yacht Club. The more energetic riders can continue under the Coronado Bridge, along Silver Strand Bikeway and Palm Avenue onto the Imperial Beach Pier.
This trail connects with the Coastal Rail Train at the north end. Simply take the Coronado Ferry from the Coronado Ferry Landing Pier and connect with the Coastal Trail there.

San Diego Coastal Rail Trail (Family-friendly Encinitas to San Elijo Lagoon)
This Coastal Rail Trail will eventually be a 44-mile multi-use trail connecting the coastal hotspots of Oceanside, Del Mar, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and San Diego. One of the most attractive and family-friendly sections is the well-maintained loop running from Ecinatas (parking areas can be found at Swami’s Beach) alongside Cardiff State Beach, taking you past GlenPark and the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Preserve.
This is a flat, paved, family-friendly route with continuous views of the ocean, suited to Class 1 and Class 2 e-Bikes, city bikes, kids' bikes, and cargo bikes.
You can extend this trail by heading north from Ecinatas and doing the full 44-mile coastal trail, but this is a discontinuous route for which you’ll need trail maps and a long-distance electric bicycle or good battery range planning.
Mission Bay Loop Bike Path
The Mission Bay Bike Path is the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition’s recommended route that takes you through and around Mission Bay Park, a 4,600-acre aquatic leisure park that borders the San Diego River on the South Shores by Seaworld Drive.
Mission Bay Park hosts SeaWorld San Diego, Belmont Parks, the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, and stand-up paddle-boarding, making this an incredible family-friendly cycling destination. This is fully paved, easy riding with emphasis on leisure, suited to cargo bikes with kids, city bikes, and any Class 1 or Class 2 ebike, ridden conservatively.
Lake Poway Loop Trail
This is a 3.5-mile loop that runs around the hillside above Lake Poway, offering a panoramic view of the Lake and the Poway 1078 Dam. This is a natural-surface trail with an elevation gain of around 600 feet, so this is a trail for well-maintained fat tired electric bikes or e-mountain bikes due to the descending that will follow the climbs. This will require e-bike riders with advanced riding skills, and sun protection will be needed in summer, as it is exposed.
Balboa Park Loop
The Balboa Park Loop is a 5-mile loop that takes you around the 1200-acre Balboa Park, which is one of the oldest recreation parks in the US. Managed by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Diego, Balboa Park hosts the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park Gardens, and many museums and theatres. This is a relaxed riding culture, heritage, and history trail well-suited to Class 1 e-Bikes, city bikes, and cargo bikes.

San Diego has a range of mountain bike trails to suit Class 1 eMTB and Class 2 eMTB, covering beginner-style loops, technical singletracks, forest trails with roots and rocks, and steep descents for extended e-MTB downhill runs. Black Mountain Open Space
Trails here range from intermediate to difficult and include steep technical routes, switchbacks, and rocky sections, and is for advanced e-mountain bikers. It is one of the most popular trail systems in Southern California.
Los Penasquitos Canyon County Preserve
This 3.700 acre preserve includes a wide selection of trails suited to Class 1 eMTB and Class 2 eMTB. Class 3 eMTBs are not permitted here. It is one of the most popular trail systems in San Diego County, so trail courtesy is a must. The Penasquitos Canyon Valley Loop is an easy valley floor loop with a beautiful waterfall on the route, which is family-friendly. If you want a challenge, the Los Penasquitos and Del Mar Mesa Intro Tour is recommended as an intro ride by the San Diego Mountain Biking Association.
