New York is one of the most exciting places to explore by e-Bike, combining world-famous landmarks with a growing network of accessible bike paths and greenways. If you’re visiting, chances are you want to experience the city's many attractions, and e-Biking offers one of the best ways to do just that.

Key information about New York’s best trails

A key highlight is the Central Park Loop, an iconic ride right in the heart of Manhattan. It’s a fully paved loop that takes in some of the city’s most recognisable attractions while remaining accessible for families and leisure riders.

Beyond the park, New York’s waterfront greenways provide longer, more scenic routes. Trails like the Hudson River Greenway and East River Greenway offer uninterrupted riding with views of the Manhattan skyline, Manhattan bridges, and interesting river traffic.

New York State follows the Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-Bike system, although in New York City, Class 3 e-Bikes are generally restricted. Compliant e-Bikes are treated similarly to traditional bicycles, meaning no licence or registration is required.

Hudson River Greenway Trail

River trails are always enjoyable, but the Hudson River Greenway trail is a unique and iconic electric bike ride set against the backdrop of the majestic Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. Running from Battery Park to the George Washington Bridge, the 11.5-mile path is fully paved, but there is some elevation gain and a few higher-speed descents to ensure your electric bike is well-maintained. This bike lane has plenty of rest stops and attractions en route, such as Riverside Park and Hudson River Park.

East River Greenway Trail

This trail connects with the Hudson River Greenway Trail at the Lower Manhattan end of the trail at Battery Park and is about 9 miles in length. It’s fully paved and again perfect for city bikes, cargo bikes, and Class 1 e-Bikes and Class 2 e-Bikes. This route provides panoramic views of the East River, the Manhattan Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty. You can access the Brooklyn Bridge Bicycle Path to cross the river to visit the Brooklyn Bridge Park, which has extensive bicycle trails. Surface is a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, but perfect for e-Bikes, all types of cargo bikes, and relaxed-riding city bikes. Such is the nature of the area that there are a few steep inclines that may come as a surprise, but are perfectly achievable with the help of some e-bike pedal assist!

Governor’s Island Trail: 7-mile loop

Accessible by ferry, Governor’s Island is 172 acres in size and has an extensive network of bike paths and car-free zones, making it a great destination for e-Bike riding. Just yards from the Ferry, is Blazing Saddles, a flexible bike rental shop offering over e-Bikes for rent, including cargo bikes, e-Bikes with child seats, electric city bikes, and more. As well as having an exceptional view of the Manhattan skyline, its key attractions include Fort Jay and Outlook Hill, but you will need to leave your bike to climb this, so ensure to bring a quality bike lock!

Empire State Trail: Long-distance e-Bike trail

This is no normal trail! Launched in 2017, the 750-mile Empire State Trail is an epic tour of the region, well-suited to a long-range electric bike. The trail takes on a journey through New York’s history, iconic places, and incredible landscapes. The route goes through New York City through the Hudson Valley, west to Buffalo along the Erie Canalway Trail, then North to Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks. This would, of course, be a multi-day ride requiring careful battery range planning and route planning. New York State has created an Empire State Trail Map to help with this.
