Highlights of Los Angeles E-Bike Riding

Los Angeles is one of the most varied e-bike riding destinations in Southern California, offering everything from flat coastal paths to hilly inland trails and urban bike networks. Whether you’re looking for an easy family ride or something more challenging, the city has a route to match.

A key feature is the Los Angeles River Path, which runs through the city and provides a mostly flat, accessible route ideal for beginners and families. From here, riders can connect to a wider network of trails, including coastal routes along the Pacific and inland river and park trail systems.
For example, LA offers easy access to iconic beachfront rides such as the South Bay Bike Path, part of the famous Marvin Braude Trail, allowing you to cruise alongside the Pacific Ocean from Hermosa Beach through Venice and up to Santa Monica.

If you’re after something more adventurous, areas like Griffith Park provide a completely different riding experience. With miles of trails, elevation, and panoramic views of LA and the Hollywood Hills, it’s a great option for riders looking to push a little further on electric mountain bikes or fat-tire setups.

What are the Best E-Bike Trails in Los Angeles?

Griffith Park Trail System (including the Griffith Park Observatory Loop)

This is one of the most popular route networks in Los Angeles, taking you through and around Griffith Park, home of the world-famous Griffith Observatory, and one of Los Angeles County's best free public attractions. Griffith Park is a large, picturesque park with several areas of relative wilderness. It contains 70 miles of trails and bike paths, mountain peaks, and the Greek Theatre. Here are four of the best e-bike trails in Griffith Park.

Over The Hill: North to South

This 6.4-mile ride includes 900 feet of elevation gain and takes you over the Santa Monica Mountains over rough roads and potholes. This would suit experienced riders on fat tire electric bikes or e-mountain bikes with pedal assistance for the climbs. There are some steep downhill sections as this is essentially a there-and-back ride, so what goes up 900 ft must come down! A well-maintained electric bike with working brakes is a safety must-have. The climb offers views of the Hollywood Hills, the Hollywood Sign, and panoramic city views of LA.

Mount Hollywood Loop

This 7.2-mile loop has 600 ft of elevation gain, so it is a little easier than the previous trail, but this route will again suit electric mountain bike riders and fat-tired electric bicycles that are well-maintained and have good brakes due to rough roads and potholes. This route starts and ends at the Greek Theatre and Roosevelt Municipal Golf Course and spans the lower flanks of Mount Hollywood.

Travel Town Railroad Museum to Griffith Park Merry Go Round

This is an easy 4-mile bike lane that is flat, starting at the heritage landmark, Travel Town Railroad Museum, and takes you past the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad. This is a museum and miniature rail with a spooky Halloween Ghost Train in October. You then take the bike-friendly zoo drive, which takes you past the LA Zoo and the Autry Museum of the American West before terminating at the Merry Go Round parking areas. This feature-packed route will require a trail map and is best enjoyed at weekends as roads are quieter. This route is best suited to experienced riders who are comfortable being on roads with cars.

Los Angeles River Path (Glendale Narrows section), also known as the LA River Path.

This is a 38-mile discontinuous bike lane running through Glendale Narrows and then again between downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. Glendale Narrows is a 3.6-mile picturesque stretch of bike lane, which you can join at Riverside Drive. It is a wildlife viewing spot featuring ducks, Geese, egrets, swallows, and cranes. This is flat and family-friendly, suitable for a cargo bike and a class 1 or class 2 Ebike.

South Bay Bike Path Trail (part of the Marvin Braude Bike Trail)

This South Bay Bike beach trail is a mostly flat shared-use path running with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. It runs from Hermosa Beach alongside Manhattan Beach, ending at the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. Here you can connect with the Ballona Creek Bike Path, which takes you inland through the wildlife area and ends in Culver City. The Ballona Creek Path is an easy route suitable for cargo bikes with child seats, electric city bikes, and any Class 1 and Class 2 e-Bikes, ridden conservatively on what can be one of the busiest bike lanes in the area. The route is fairly exposed, so ensure to bring adequate sun protection.

Being part of the 22-mile Marvin Braude Trail (which starts further south at Torrance Beach, this route can be easily extended, allowing you to ride past Venice Beach up to Santa Monica Beach and Santa Monica Pier, stopping within touching distance of Will Rogers State Beach, set at the foot of the majestic Santa Monica Mountains.
