Best Electric Bike Brakes For E-Bikes: Stopping Power

Written by: Robbie Ferri | May 29, 2026 Time to read 6 min

Brakes might not be the most exciting part of an e-Bike, but they are arguably the most important. A powerful motor means nothing if the bike struggles to stop safely when fully loaded or riding downhill.

Electric bikes are getting more powerful each year, and the technology that takes us faster is advancing rapidly. Powerful brakes are often overlooked, and from what I have been told, they are quite important for stopping. I know I need them for my overconfidence when riding off-road.

The strategy of il eventually stop just doesn’t really cut it anymore. This article is going to tell you everything you need to know about different types of brakes, how they work, and some of the most recommended on the market.

What Are The Different Types Of Brakes On E-Bikes?

I have been a bike mechanic for a very long time and have had the pleasure of working on some excellent rides and some not so much. When it comes to e-Bikes, there are actually a few different types of brakes that you are going to find. Some are excellent, and others are not fit for the job.

Rim Brakes

Rim brakes use friction on the wheel's surface to slow down. A very simple system that works well on the road and on some light commuter e-Bikes. They use a simple cable and caliper, and are very cheap for companies to add, but are not too often seen on e-Bikes.

Rim brakes are not excellent performers and are quite terrible in wet conditions and under heavy loads. Unless the e-Bike is very low-powered or only used for flat commuting, we wouldn’t recommend them.

Mechanical Disc Brakes

Disc brakes create friction by pressing the pads against a disc attached to the bike's wheel to slow the bike down. The mechanical version uses a brake cable, pulled by a lever like a rim brake, but it tightens on the disc.

They are great in poor weather conditions, don’t wear down the wheel, and the mechanical versions are very simple to work on. Although they are better than rim brakes, they do not deliver amazing stopping power, but they are ok for a low-power e-Bike.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Hydraulic disc brakes are similar to mechanical disc brakes, but instead of a cable, they use hydraulic fluid to actuate the brake caliper. They are incredibly powerful, self-adjust, and very easy on the hands. They are seen on powerful electric bikes and other high-end gear.

They are not as easy to work on as cable brakes, as they do need bleeding every so often, but they are overall excellent. We highly recommend these for electric bikes, and anything with power should be fitted with hydraulic systems.

Why Are Brakes So Important On E-Bikes?

There’s no surprise that e-Bikes need a lot more braking power compared to traditional bikes. Here’s why.

  • E-Bikes are heavier: More weight needs more stopping power.
  • They travel faster: Higher speeds need stronger brakes.
  • More momentum: Heavy bikes take longer to stop.
  • Safer in wet weather: Better braking improves control.
  • Better for steep hills: Descents put extra stress on brakes.
  • Important for carrying loads: Cargo bikes need stronger braking.
  • Improved rider confidence: Good brakes feel safer and more stable.
  • Less hand fatigue: Hydraulic brakes need less effort.
  • More off-road control: Strong braking systems help on rough terrain.
  • Essential for eMTBs: Powerful bikes need powerful brakes.

What Brakes Will You Find On What Bikes?

As mentioned above, you will find different types of brakes on different types of bikes. Here’s what we expect to see depending on the bike types.
Brake TypeCommonly Found On
Rim BrakesOlder road bikes, budget hybrids, lightweight commuter e-Bikes
Mechanical Disc BrakesBudget commuter bikes, folding e-Bikes, entry-level hybrids
Hydraulic Disc BrakesModern e-MTBs, premium commuters, trekking, and cargo bikes

What Are The Best Bike Brake Upgrades On An E-Bike?

If you’re thinking about upgrading your brakes on your electric bike, here’s what we recommend and the order in which you should do it.

Step One: Mechanical To Hydraulic

If you haven’t already got hydraulic disc brakes, then this is a huge upgrade. The power is much better and can be a very easy swap on most electric bikes. Here are some recommended hydraulic disc brakes.

  • Shimano Deore M6100: Excellent value and reliable stopping power.
  • Shimano Saint or SLX M7120: Great for aggressive trail and eMTB riding.
  • SRAM Code RSC or SRAM Maven: Powerful brakes designed for heavier bikes and steep descents.
  • Magura MT7: Very strong braking with excellent modulation.
  • Hope Tech 3 V4: High-end performance with fantastic build quality.

You can upgrade from a 2-piston brake to a 4-piston brake for even more stopping power if hydraulic brakes alone are not enough.

Step Two: Bigger Rotors

If you already have hydraulic brakes but still need more power, why not upgrade to larger rotors? You can get certain adaptors and larger rotors, which will help dissipate heat more effectively and slow you down faster. Upgrading from 160mm to 180mm or 200mm is definitely an option.

Step Three: Better Brake Pads

Finally, the last upgrade is better brake pads. Performance brake pads are not cheap, but when upgraded, they make a huge difference. With better compounds, you can achieve much more power stopping and even better modulation.

Can I Go Rim-Brake To Disc-Brake?

It’s important to know that the conversion from rim brake e-Bikes to disc brake e-Bikes is very difficult and cannot be done easily. In this case, we recommend trading in your old bike and getting a proper disc-brake bike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are hydraulic brakes better for e-Bikes?

Hydraulic disc brakes are generally the best option for modern e-Bikes, especially electric mountain bikes. They offer stronger stopping power, better control, and require less effort at the brake lever.

Are rim brakes good enough for e-Bikes?

Rim brakes can work on lightweight commuter e-Bikes, but they struggle in wet weather and under heavy loads. Most riders are better off with disc brakes, as braking force and heat dissipation are much better.
Do hydraulic brakes need maintenance?
Hydraulic brakes occasionally need bleeding with fresh brake fluid, but they are generally low-maintenance and self-adjusting. A small price to pay for the braking performance you get.

Key Takeaways

  1. Hydraulic disc brakes: Are the best option for most modern e-Bikes. Thanks to their power, control, and reliability.
  2. Heavier, faster e-Bikes: They place much greater demands on braking systems than regular bicycles.
  3. Upgrading: Hydraulic brakes, larger rotors, and better pads can massively improve stopping performance and rider confidence. It’s a must on high-performance bikes.
