What are the Best E-Bike Trails in Pittsburgh for Families and Relaxed Riding?
Great Allegheny Passage (aka the GAP Trail)
This trail truly deserves to have the word great in its title. At 150 miles, this is one of the longest touring cycling routes that has featured so far, and is well-suited to long range electric bikes. This trail connects Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, and connects to the C&O Canal Towpath, enabling you to make the epic ride to Washington, D.C.
The Pittsburgh section of the ride is a paved Class 1 Bike lane suitable for cargo bikes, tagalongs, and relaxed riding, and within typical battery range. It is extremely scenic, running alongside the Monongahela River past Pittsburgh’s Southside and Downtown Pittsburgh, offering views of the Grand City Skyline and many industrial heritage landmarks.
If you want to ride the full epic GAP journey to Washington, you’ll need to plan your overnight stops and recharging points carefully and ideally visit a local bike shop for a health check prior to this 3 to 5-day trip.

Three Rivers Heritage Trail
If you want a heritage-filled bicycle experience, then the 35-mile Three Rivers Heritage Trail is for you. It’s a non-linear and flexible route, so you can adapt the distance to suit preferences and battery range.
This e-Bike trail runs alongside and connects the Allegheny River, Monongahela, and Ohio River and provides scenic riverfront views. It’s a mostly flat ride, making it suitable for families, city bikes, cargo bikes, tagalongs, and any Class 1 electric bike. Heritage stops include the Andy Warhol Museum, Phipps Conservatory, Fort Pitt Museum in Point State Park, a recreation stop in itself, and Schenley Park, which offers some excellent mountain biking trails (which is mentioned next)
Schenley Park and Frick Park Mountain Biking Trails
For a more challenging fat tire e-Bike trail riding experience, you can visit Schenley Park, which has a mountain bike trail system comprising 10 distinct routes with significant elevation gain that will suit downhill mountain bikes.
The Lower Westinghouse trail has an easy difficulty rating on the single track scale, while the rest are considered intermediate, with the popular trail being the Panther Hollow Trail, a twisty, winding route.
About 3 km west of Schenley Park is Frick Park, which is another mountain bike trail system aimed at intermediate mountain bike riders.
The Bridle Trail
This trail is still in Schenley Park, but it runs around the perimeter alongside the south cliffside of the Park, so it is mostly flat. The Bridle Trail is 1.4 miles in length, one-way, and provides views of downtown Pittsburgh and the city’s southern hills, and also offers a glimpse of the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. It's a family-friendly trail suitable for fat tire e-bikes and cargo bikes. The Bridal Trail connects with the Oval Trail (0.6-mile loop trail), but there is a steep climb up to this extension. Alternatively, you can connect to the Vietnam Veterans’ Trail at the end, which is another short, easy trail.
Rail Trails
This is the first of the family-friendly cycling routes in Aurora. It's a comfortable 13-mile paved/light gravel route well within range of the typical e-Bike battery, and is suitable for a family day out. It is a very well-maintained trail which offers scenic views of woodlands and follows the creek from Turtle Pond (Bear Creek Lake Park) to South Platte River Drive in Sheridan at the foot of the Rockies. There are picnic stations on route and is considered to be a gentle grade journey with 5% or less inclines.

Bike Share Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is a very bike-friendly location, as shown by Bike Share Pittsburgh. This is an easy-to-use bike share scheme that allows users to easily and flexibly rent or hire bikes for use around the city's many bike lanes. Bikes are collected from POGOH stations, which are conveniently located around the city.
