Most e-Bikes are unisex, but sizing, weight, and comfort features still matter— especially for women.

Pretty much all bikes and e-Bikes are unisex these days. We ditched the outdated view that step-through frames are for women a long time ago, but that doesn’t mean we should stop thinking about how to find the right bike for female riders altogether. Questions around frame size, bike weight, and women-specific design persist, and it’s worth digging a little deeper when searching for the perfect bike.

Historically, bikes have been designed for and marketed to men, leaving performance and comfort on the table for female cyclists, and a more informed view can help move past that. Here’s what to know about electric bikes for women and what to consider to find your next ride.

Women-specific electric bikes

Now, there are a few e-Bikes out there that feature women-specific design. It’s less common for e-Bikes than regular bikes, but brands like Liv offer a fleet of models built around women’s needs. These bikes respond to women having, on average, a shorter height, lower weight, shorter torso, and proportionally longer legs. The frame geometry may be tweaked in addition to adapted handlebar and saddle shapes. Often, the biggest difference is frame sizes that run smaller— such as Liv’s size S and XS frames— to properly accommodate smaller riders.

For example, the Liv Amiti E+ and Liv Tempt E+ are excellent women-specific models.

Consider frame size & fit

No matter who you are, prioritizing proper bike fit is a must. The unfortunate thing about e-Bikes is that there are generally fewer frame size options compared to standard bikes, especially for entry-level models. Many cheaper brands keep costs down by offering a one-size frame or opt for a step-through frame to accommodate the widest range of rider heights. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of.

That said, the ubiquity of step-through frames among electric bikes makes sense for other reasons. A large part of the e-Bike market is for older riders or people who may have mobility limitations, and a step-thru frame is a big help when mounting the bike. Also, cargo e-Bikes or city e-Bikes with a rear rack may have a step-through design to avoid having to swing your leg over the cargo and risk any loss of balance. Electric bikes weigh more, and simply stepping through can help maintain balance.

But, be wary of one-size or step-thru frames that supposedly fit short riders, because while that technically may be true, other models that are more size-specific may feel better. When in doubt, take test rides, look up manufacturer specs, and read bike reviews. And if you’re taller, well, you have more to choose from!

Lightweight e-Bikes are a great choice

If you want to avoid a bike that may feel cumbersome, given the large size or added weight of the motor and battery, lightweight e-Bikes are a solid option. They feel more similar to standard bikes and are a popular choice for some female riders or smaller cyclists. But if you want to go big with a heavier cargo e-Bikeor souped-up model, by all means go for it.

Ride what you like & what works for you

In the end, my advice is simple: ride the electric bike that you love and make sure it works for you. It should fit properly, be comfortable, have the features you want, and make you want to ride it!

There’s not as much variety among e-Bikes as there is among traditional bikes, so you may have a longer search, but the added boost and recreational nature of e-Bikes typically softens the need for ultimate performance gains, anyway. Frequently Asked Questions

Are electric bikes safe?

Yes, e-Bikes are safe to ride, and they continue to get even safer due to better battery technology and safety certifications. Riders should keep in mind, however, the additional weight and higher speeds of electric bikes. Upway recommends against purchasing low-quality e-Bikes or used models that haven’t been inspected by a professional.

Is it better to have a removable battery on an electric bike?

I’m a big fan of removable batteries since they offer more options for charging, along with the advantage of swapping in a spare battery to extend the range. Most electric bikes have a removable battery so a majority of bike manufacturers and riders must agree with me. However, a non-removable battery is definitely not a deal breaker.

How much do e-Bikes weigh?

Most standard e-Bikes weigh between 20 and 25 kilograms, or around 45 to 55 pounds. Performance-oriented e-MTBs are on the lighter side despite the added suspension, ranging from 15 to 28 kilograms. Folding e-Bikes designed for commuters usually weigh around 20 kilograms for portability. On the heavier end, electric cargo bikes tip the scales at up to 40 kilograms.

Key Takeaways

  1. Women-specific e-Bikes exist, but most models are unisex— fit and comfort matter more than the label.
  2. Prioritize correct frame size and test rides over “one-size” or default step-through options.
  3. Lightweight e-Bikes can improve comfort and control, especially for smaller riders.
