A cadence sensor detects when you are pedalling and activates the motor to provide assistance. It delivers power in a more basic “on/off” way, meaning the motor kicks in once you start pedalling, regardless of how hard you push.
This is different from a torque sensor, which adjusts motor power based on how much force you apply to the pedals. Cadence sensors are common on budget electric bikes, while torque sensors tend to offer a smoother and more natural riding experience.
